Liewell claims club does not have bigots

Recommended Posts

Celtic have privately urged Uefa to intervene in the sectarianism debate in Scottish football, with the hope of making the SFA and Scottish Premier League more forceful in tackling the problem.

In private correspondence between Celtic and the SFA, Peter Lawwell, the Celtic chief executive, has also insisted that his club does not have a sectarianism problem, in a clear effort by Lawwell to distance Celtic from the current difficulties being faced by Rangers.

Celtic have even suggested that Michel Platini, the president of Uefa, should become more proactive in a debate that is haunting the Scottish game, and which has led to Uefa taking yet further sanctions against Rangers for sectarian chanting.

It is believed Lawwell has been irked by recent references to the “Old Firm problem” when, in fact, the chief executive believes that Celtic as a club has little case to answer on the subject.

Lawwell’s recent move came in correspondence between himself and Stewart Regan, the SFA chief executive. Significantly, Lawwell also forwarded his letter to Platini, inviting a greater participation by the Uefa president. Platini’s department has since replied to Celtic’s overtures.

Some will view Celtic’s positioning on the subject as raising the stakes in the current Old Firm debate, especially in light of Rangers’ recent troubles. The Ibrox club is likely to announce this week that it will not appeal the recent punishment handed down by Uefa — a £72,000 fine and a ban on away supporters in Europe — following reports of bigoted chanting.

Celtic tonight face Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Highlands and will go two points clear of Rangers with three games to play if they win. Celtic have not lost in eight meetings with their opponents, though Terry Butcher’s side did scare Celtic in Glasgow earlier this season.

Neil Lennon, the Celtic manager, remains wary of the task facing his team. “It will be very difficult,” he said. “Inverness is never easy at any stage of the season and Terry [butcher] will have his team very motivated. You can easily come unstuck up there. We were 2-0 up against them at Celtic Park and drew 2-2, in a game we threw away. But I think we’re in a better position now than we were back in December. We’ve got all our big players fit again and they are champing at the bit to play.”

Meanwhile. there was new evidence last night that the tortured Craig Whyte takeover of Rangers could be finalised either today or tomorrow. It is understood that a further, key meeting will take place today between Whyte’s advisers and those of Sir David Murray, the Rangers majority stakeholder, at which a deal is hoped to be reached.

Some members of the Rangers board remain sceptical about the Whyte bid, while others believe the 39-year-old businessman remains the best possible hope for the club in the medium term.

Whyte has appeared to backtrack on his pledge to invest £5 million a year on new players over the next five years in Rangers, but he has insisted that he can still take the club forward.

makes my blood boil at the sheer cheek this fucking Arsehole has and the cretin who constantly writes these stories, Graham Speirs. Man should be banned from everything scottish football related, he is a fucking moron of the highest order and a one trick fucking pony and his one trick is his vendetta against Rangers.

He really is a cunt.

"fuck all to do with us, it's those bad men across the city they are always being mean about us"

Yet again the victim card is played. So many people will accept it though, I hope someone at Rangers has something to say about this. All you have to do is go onto youtube and you have millions of evidence.
