McGregor, Davis, Bougherra, Whittaker talks scheduled

Recommended Posts

ALLY McCOIST’S reign as Rangers manager has kicked into gear with talks to keep Allan McGregor, Steve Davis, Madjid Bougherra and Steven Whittaker at Ibrox.

Record Sport can reveal the new boss jetted out to central Europe yesterday to run the rule over possible new signing targets.

But he only did so after persuading owner Craig Whyte to find the cash to offer new long-term contracts to four of the key men from Walter Smith’s title-winning squad.

The players’ agents have all been invited to meet Whyte and his people over the course of the next seven to 10 days with McGregor’s advisers expected to be the first to arrive at the negotiating table, possible within the next 48 hours.

The Scotland keeper still has two more seasons to run on his current deal but Whyte knows McGregor is one of the most valuable assets in McCoist’s group and hopes to tie him up on a bumper extension.

In fact Whyte believes McGregor could fetch as much as £9million in the summer transfer market. However, the man who bought Sir David Murray out for just £1 has no wish to cash in on a player who has also made public his desire to stay with Rangers.

Northern Ireland playmaker Davis and Scotland full-back Whittaker are now entering the final 12 months of their contracts and McCoist is desperate to have both tied down on new deals rather than allow them to enter into next season with uncertainty over their long-term futures.

Turkish side Bursaspor have shown interest in Whittaker and had been hopeful his former Ibrox team-mate Kenny Miller might help lure him abroad.

But Miller, who left Rangers in January to pen a megabucks £50,000-a-week deal with the Turks, is already pining for a move back to Britain after failing to settle in Bursa and therefore is unlikely to advise close friend Whittaker not to make the same mistake.

Davis is also keen on a new deal but – with a string of English top-flight clubs monitoring his situation – the price will have to be right if Whyte is to convince him to sign up for another two or three years.

Whyte will also try to persuade Bougherra into a rethink but that may prove difficult.

Bougherra, in fact, may already be a lost cause. The Algerian international has been angling for a move for more than 18 months and, during previous talks with suspended chief executive Martin Bain, it’s believed he was demanding as much as £35,000-a-week to extend his deal.

Whyte will not be browbeaten into sanctioning anything near those kind of exorbitant terms and so Bougherra is more likely to be allowed to find himself a new club, so long as a transfer fee can be agreed.

Former Rangers striker Shota Arveladze, now manager at another Turkish club, Kayserispor, had been closing in on the defender but last night the Georgian was close to admitting defeat, believing he’s already been beaten to the punch.

Arveladze said: “Madjid was my first option but I have been told in the past couple of days that he has rejected my offer. I have been told he has something else.”

Good news all round.

Hardly a barometer of success is it.

Our goals to corners ratio across the whole team is poor.

Aye thats right we have had many centre backs who can beat 4 or 5 palyers and score a goal of the season. We also have had many score volleys in the CL

Bougherra can get to! If he goes to the EPL I highly doubt he would stand out as a class defender. Near enough every time he talks to the media he mentions wanting to leave.

Go back decades and look at the amount of goals we scored through centre halfs at free kicks and corners . The amount of times he loses the ball when he TRIES to dribble far outweighs the amount of times anything good comes from it . Big prima donna and wont be missed .

Bougherra was good enough for Arsenal, worth £15m and was our best player. Now he can get to fuck, mid-table EPL at best and not worth 35k per week!

You've got to love the black or white views on show. :D

In general our delivery into the box had been poor. Look at the amount of goals scored by our strikers via headers never mind our defenders. Davie Weir must be chronic then as Boogie has been here less time than him but has more goals going by your theory.

Seriously stick to watching the jacobites
