Champions League for Champions only?

As we are about to depart on yet another European adventure, does anyone else think that the Champions League needs to go back to the format of being for the Champions of each individual country. I for one feel that the competition is cheapened by teams who may play in decent leagues getting automatic entry to group phases by finishing third while teams like ourselves, who are champions of our country are left to negotiate tough qualifiers just for the pleasure to play there. How are teams from smaller countries supposed to compete financially with already wealthy sides from wealthy leagues swallowing up champions league money year after year, without having to do very much to get there. Don't think this will change anytime soon, in the meantime UEFA's big wigs just keep filling up their coffers.

How are other teams in that league supposed to compete financially if only one team gets CL money? The champions one season with careful management could just buy all the best players in the league because they have more money and CL

The competition isn't designed with fair play in mind, the seeding system should tell you that. It's designed to bring in TV audiences and make sure there are as many high quality games on TV as possible.

Under the current format you have multiple European giants playing eachother on a weekly basis. Under your proposed system, you'd have one side each from the watchable 8-10 leagues in Europe and another 22-24 from diddy leagues. The vast majority of the games would be pish like the champions of Belarus playing the champions of Finland, and nobody wants to watch that.

The current format of the Champions League is a symptom of the oversaturation of the game in the media. As long as there's money to be made from throwing the biggest teams together every year, that's precisely what will happen.

The most sensible solution would be to assign say ten automatic qualifying places, with each league getting one. Those ten being the top ten leagues according to the rankings. Beyond that, every club needs to qualify. That way you maintain the current draw of having loads of big clubs and good players facing off regularly, but you kill the situation that leads to the Scottish champions going through qualifying while the second placed side in England walk straight into the groups.

That's pretty much what is happening in the smaller leagues anyway, ourselves and the other mob dominate our domestic game, and for being champions I feel teams should be rewarded with champions league football. What gives the likes of 2nd to 4th English, Spanish teams the right to play in this competition when they have won nothing. Our game is nearly at rockbottom and this is because there are very few top players, if any, playing in our league. How many times do you see full houses at away grounds when we travel, few and far between, when we had better players opposition fans wanted to come 1st to support their team 2nd to see some of our quality players in the flesh. Full houses = more income, which by and large means an improvement in the standard of our game. The only way we can afford a better standard of player is with access to the champions league and it's riches, as we are champions regularly, we should be rewarded accordingly.

UEFA don't really want us wee teams to have a chance.

If they had their pick, every season, the last eight would be: Man Utd, Arsenal, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Bayern Munich and maybe a Porto or Ajax.

All about their audiences, so we're fucked.

Remember '93-'93? There was real, huge buzz about because we could not only get to the final, but had a real shot at winning it.

Nowadays, 20 years on, it's all about us getting in, getting the money and maybe a last 16 or Europa run.

Form euro leagues and let the champions play in tier 1 the 2nd teams in tier 2 etc.

Then let the winners and or 2nd place teams in each tier play in a final league for champions of champions, either way they need to filter money down into the wee diddy leagues.

This way money is getting to the wee leagues and the organisers maintain their cash income.

Its really not that hard to see the game is heading down the shitter.

I have always believed the Champions League should be for the Champions of each country, no matter the standard of the league they play in. The way it has been run up till now is one of the major reasons for countries like Belgium, Holland, and Scotland falling behind in the financial stakes.

Things will only get worse as the big clubs from the big leagues get richer by the year, and the smaller clubs from the smaller leagues get poorer.

It's run by the big clubs to suit the big clubs.

How many seasons go past when you can't pick out the 2 clubs who will qualify from EVERY section in the CL?

TV has fucked the game in more ways than one.

3pm kick offs on a Saturday is another thing that should be brought back, but it won't be due to the TV deals.

The only losers nowadays are the punters who roll up to all the games with their hard earned and actually follow and support their clubs financially.

And before anybody jumps oan me, I am not in any way saying these guys are better fans than the ones who don't follow the club by putting their hands in their pocket!

There are 53 countries under UEFA. How could the tournament be formatted? I suppose it could be a simple knockout with the bottom ranked 10 teams playing off to make a 48 team tourney? Then 24 teams H and A, then 12 teams H and A then 6 teams split into 2 groups playing each other H and A with the winners of each group in the final. 10 or 11 games to win it. Won't happen though.

Don't know about going back to champions only but would love to see them ditch the seeding for the group stages and just pick them out at random , this would give clubs from the smaller countries such as ourselves a chance of getting a group we have a good chance of qualifying from and would hopefully get some different teams into the last 16 , quarter finals instead of the same big clubs every year. Would also mean there would be a good chance of a real group of death... Imagine for examples sake man utd , Barcelona, inter milan, real Madrid all in the same group , it would be fantastic.

:uk: FIFA, UEFA all they care about is the money, I mean the Champions of Belgium have to play the same number of qualifying rounds as a 4th place english and spanish side that never even challenged for their domestic title but were in fact just happy enough to chase that 4th spot, at the very least the champions of the smaller leagues should be given some kind of advantage over the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place teams of larger leagues, I would also like to stop seeing the big 3 leagues have 2 teams autmomatically go to the group stages, 1 from each nation is enough :uk:

It's run by the big clubs to suit the big clubs.

That's it in a nutshell these days. How long before we find ourselves watching a CL modelled on the NFL in the US?

Platini's financial fair-play idea will fall flat on it's face the moment they so much as hint at excluding a big TV audience attracting club. Real, Milan, Bayern, Man U and more are already effectively exempt from these rules because of their economic power.

And lest people forget - clubs of this stature tell EUFA what to do, not the other way around as we have seen many times before.

Them's the rules.

Instead of bitching about how unfair it is we should concentrate on making ourselves good enough to challenge these teams. Over to you, McCoist.

And if Mr Whyte can get us to fuck out of this back-water league so much the better for the clubs aspirations.

Totally agree, and preferably without the other lot. Maybe then our support will have higher aspirations than simply finishing ahead of them.
