HEANEY has been most progressive since stepped up to 3m, and he can his development in the Pertemps Qualifier at Cheltenham today. There’s always an element of risk in the Pertemps series given that a horse’s presence in the race might merely be to qualify it for the final at the Cheltenham Festival, but the fact that Heaney held entries in three different events at Cheltenham this weekend suggests connections were coming over with serious intent on winning. Moreover, these qualifiers have been very favourable towards the in-form horses at the front end of the market in recent years; backing every outright favourite in the Pertemps qualifiers in Britain since 2000 would have produced 28 wins from 66 bets and a profit of 31 points, and those results look fairly robust despite the small sample size as no winning favourite was bigger than 9-2. Heaney has been confidently ridden on his last two starts and won with a bit to spare, probably idling in the closing stages last time having made smooth progress from the rear. His mark of 129 (2lb higher than his Irish mark) still looks workable and he should be hard to beat for his in-form yard.

5/1 into 7/2 (tu)
