Its now time to add quality, we cant just keep on bringing in decent/mediocre players. That has gone on for too long now and does not work.

My point exactly, bring in a few good quality sinings each year with the budget, forget all freebies. in about 3 years time the squad would be much stronger all over the field

Says they understand he has signed.

Celtic have moved in to sign former Hibernian forward Chris Killen, BBC Scotland understands.

Gordon Strachan's side have picked up the New Zealand international, who scored 15 goals last season for the Edinburgh club, on a Bosman transfer.

The 25-year-old was poised to sign for Cardiff City in January and the Welsh club revived their interest last week, before the striker's switch to Celtic.

Killen recently rejected the offer of a new contract with Hibernian.

BEATTIE OUT ... BUT KILLEN IN FOR CELTS

Strachan set to edge Cardiff for Hibs striker

Exclusive by Gordon Parks And Craig Swan

CELTIC last night stunned Craig Beattie by informing the striker he can leave Parkhead - after edging towards a deal for Hibs striker Chris Killen.

Manager Gordon Strachan has taken the next step in his squad reshaping for the club's bid for three in a row after a day of moves in Glasgow's East End.

Killen appeared set for a move to Cardiff City but Celtic have intervened at the 11th hour and are closing in on a deal.

Record Sport understands Cardiff flew Killen to South Wales yesterday morning and the player underwent a medical at the University of Wales Hospital in the city.

However, the 25-year-old then stunned manager Dave Jones by declaring he was heading back to Scotland to speak to Celtic.

Cardiff are furious at the Kiwi's actions and it is also understood the player held talks with Parkhead bosses last night.

Beattie, meanwhile, looks to be heading out of the exit door.

The Scotland international has fought for four years to become a first-team regular after breaking into the set-up under previous boss Martin O'Neill.

Celtic, though, have informed the hitman they are likely to accept any suitable offer received for his services.

The news will stun Beattie who spoke after last weekend's Scottish Cup Final win over Dunfermline about his ambitions for next term.

The striker has often shown signs of promise for the SPL champions but injury problems have hampered his attempts to convince manager Strachan he can hold down a regular slot in his side.

No price has been placed on the head of the goalscorer and Celtic will assess on an individual basis the interest which is certain to come come from across the UK.

Aberdeen and Dundee United have both previously expressed interest in the striker but there is also the possibility Beattie could feature in any deal involving West Brom's £5million-rated midfielder Jason Koumas.

Hawthorns boss Tony Mowbray sounded out the prospect of signing the attacker during his spell in charge of Hibs.

Mowbray knows he will have to sell Koumas after Albion failed to reach the promised land of the English Premiership and Strachan is keen.

Beattie may be used as part of any deal if Celtic get close enough to capturing the sought-after Welsh international.

However, for the time being Beattie will have to wait and see what the future holds.

Released by Rangers as a schoolboy, he made his Celtic debut as a teenager in 2003 against Lithuanian outfit FBK Kaunas after signing on from the trainee system at Parkhead.

Beattie made just 22 starts for Celtic over the next four years with the majority of his outings coming from the substitutes bench.

Despite this the striker still managed to score 16 goals and collect three SPL championship medals.

Beattie has also collected four Scotland caps and scored a memorable maiden goal for his country with the last-gasp winner in the 2-1 triumph over Georgia in March's Euro 2008 qualifier.

He also made a timely contribution at the weekend when, with Celtic struggling in the Cup Final, he came on as a replacement for Kenny Miller and created the game's solitary goal for Jean-Joel Perrier Doumbe.

But it seems that could have been his last significant contribution in a Celtic jersey if an interested party come up with the correct package for Parkhead bosses to accept.

Killen looks set to fill the void vacated by Beattie as Celtic last night stepped up their interest.

The New Zealand international, who has been out of action since the turn of the year after sustaining a serious Achilles injury, rejected a one-year contract offer at Easter Road.

Killen attracted a host of interest from England and Cardiff appeared in pole position to land the targetman but Celtic have leaped to the front of the queue and look set to seal a deal.

Meanwhile, Norwich have had a bid turned down for Celtic keeper David Marshall.

Record Sport understands former Parkhead star Peter Grant, manager of the Championship side, made an offer which would have eventually risen to £500,000 after the 22-year-old had played a certain amount of games.

But Celtic want a bigger fee for the player despite Marshall having played just two games for the club in the past two seasons.

Norwich still remain favourites and they hope a deal can be struck, as does Marshall, who spent an enjoyable loan spell there last season before he picked up an ankle injury.

However, Celtic believe many more clubs will express an interest in Marshall, who handed in a transfer request this week and will be prepared to put together a better bid.

The Scotland international - he has two caps - is still highly regarded and widely seen as a top-class keeper.

He has a year to go on his current contract and both he and Celtic believe it would be best if he left now rather than stay for one more season where he is unlikely to play.
