Operating System

So for a few months my laptop has been notifying me that my copy of Windows 7 is not genuine. The easiest solution I came to was just to reset my laptop to Factory condition (seeing as I'm not bothered about re-installing programs as I was about to start a clear out anyway) and re-install the OS with the Windows 7 CD. Guess what though, I've lost the fuckin' CD!

However, I managed to find my old Laptop's box which has a Windows XP OS CD in it, but it says it should only be used which my old laptop manufacturers products, which is different to my current laptop. I am more than happy to use it, providing that it works..

So basically I'm just wondering if anyone who knows more on the subject can give me some advice on whether or not this will work before I go breaking my laptop.

Thank you!

EDIT: Just to make it clear, my copy of Windows is genuine and I've had this laptop for nearly two years. It's only recently I've had this problem.

I tried to find it but the one on the bottom of my laptop has deteriorated over time rendering it unreadable. I tried looking for it on the battery as I hear some Companies have started placing the product key there to avoid the aforementioned problem but got nae luck.

Have you formatted the laptop with windows 7 on it? There is no reason that is should say it isn't legit unless your key has been copied randomly and other people are using it. If this is the case contact Microsoft and they may provide a new key.

If you still have win7 installed you will be able to get a program of the internet that will tell you your current key, possibly jelly bean is the name. You can do a win7 disc from somewhere and it will work. The win XP disc will work but you may not find XP drivers for all the hardware on your newer laptop.

I've looked on the internet and apparently this isn't that uncommon. I've not done anything to the laptop yet. I've got a CD that also contains 'device drivers and utilities' for Windows XP. To be honest I preferred XP better but I'm not going to change it unless I know will work.

What type of machine do you have? Most manufactureres, especially machines with Windows 7, have a Recovery Partition either visible or hidden. Best option would be to restart your computer and as soon as it powers on keep tapping the F8 key then choose Repair Your Computer. Select your language then look for "insert manufaturer Recovery console" it will be named something like that. And choose to restore to Factory Image or factory settings.

Hope that helps. Some manufacturers hide this option but it can still be easily accessed.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot. One thing though, will I need the Windows 7 product key again? That would create a problem as I cannot seem to access it.

EDIT: Just an idea, using the Jellybean program I managed to recover my product code. If I take note of it, run the Recovery Partition, could I just re-enter the code again? Or would it be void seeing as it's already been used?

You don't need the product key for a System Recovery, it puts the machine back to it original condition (factory state) - so it will be like turning it on for the first time. I do this process quite alot for people experiencing the same/similar problems.
