A 17-year-old footballer has been arrested over allegations about sectarian comments posted on a social media website.

The Cowdenbeath FC player, understood to be Michael Fleming, has also been disciplined by the club.

A Twitter account which is said to have been used to post insulting comments about Rangers fans has been removed from the site.

A spokeswoman for Fife Constabulary confirmed that an arrest had been made.

Club statement:

“Cowdenbeath Football Club does not condone and will not tolerate any form of sectarianism”

She said: "A 17-year-old male has been arrested in relation to alleged sectarian comments made over a social media website.

"A report in relation to this will be submitted to the procurator fiscal in due course."

The chairman of Cowdenbeath FC is Donald Findlay QC, a former vice-chairman of Rangers.

In a statement, the football club said: "Following unacceptable comments made by a youth player on a social networking site last night, the player concerned has been dealt with according to the club's strict disciplinary procedures and has accepted the disposal.

"He is aware that his conduct is not acceptable. He has apologised unreservedly for his conduct.

"Cowdenbeath Football Club does not condone and will not tolerate any form of sectarianism."

Professional footballer who openly called Willie Collum a cheating h** bastard.

SFA also have a duty to investigate it for bringing the game in to disrepute.

That and various other rants about H*** and orange bastards.

He also called Jack Wilshere who wanted a Rangers win a "wee orange b--stard." VB also drew attention to his Bebo account where he was making racist remarks but about whom I dont know.Well done VB.
