Saying EBT'S are legitimate

HMRC are culpable for Rangers owing upto 70mill

Why do HMRC allow tax debt to escalate , to out of control levels

Regarding new owners of Clubs , there should be an ESCROW account openened with money deposited in it by new owner to show proper funding is avaliable

will try and get the chance to watch it later.

interesting the likes of David Gold claming that theres nothing wrong wtih EBT's.

what annoys me is that since weve been under investigation everyone seems to have us down as guilty tax-dodgers, when in actual fact, it could transpire that we acted within the law & win the case.

If the EBTs are legitimate then surely we win the tax case?

I dont think its as straight forward as that though. EBT are viewed more as a 'loophole' rather than legit practice. From what i gather is that the current tax case hinges upon how Rangers implemented the EBT's - in effect HMRC are trying to find their own loophole to counter our loophole.

i think HMRC are argueing, and trying to prove that our players using the EBT also had a 2nd contract, or a 'side' contract which proves that the whole EBT scheme was nothing more than a tax scam.

i think the fact it has taken so long is a good sign for us, as if it was cut & dried we would have already lost the case.

this has what has been bugging me since day one, all the accusations of trying to cheat the taxman, not living within our means ect

surely we have got into this mess because we have been incredibly badly advised somewhere, id like to hear a bit more about who gave out this advice

it might not have been bad advice though - if we went to an accountancy firm that specialise in tax 'efficeint savings' (or whatever you want to call a strategy devised to minimize tax) and they gave us this advice, the chances are they gave us advice on a scheme already in practice elsewhere.

Im led to believe thousands of companies in the UK have used similar schemes and that BP won a case liek this vs HMRC & vodafone also cut a favourable deal with HMRC over EBT's also.

if we win the case, then the only place to lay blame for this entire mess in the HMRC, who would have hounded our club all the way into administration when we done nothing wrong (if we win).

HMRC's credibility also has to come into question, they dont have a great deal of success in the courts and they came off looking very, very bad in the Redknapp case - and more or less admitted the whoel thing was a publicity stunt in the statement they released after losing the verdict. The scarey thing though is they would have been happy to see Redknapp & Madaric do jailtime had they won.

I wouldn't take too much heart from the programme as they didn't deal with EBT's or related cases.

However, HMRC's recent record is deplorable and their case may well have fell on its arse.

I suspect the truth may well lie between the two sides and we will have to pay something but not the full whack.

I doubt they'd push for penalties or interest too.

watched this last night not alot about Rangers but opened my eyes to how bad HMRC are being run. public money being used to chase back taxes they have no guarentees they will get and for them to say they would appeal the Rangers tax case costing more public cash is shocking.

Something interesting that was mentioned was that HMRC are going to chase clubs that have used image rights as part of a players contract,it's another way of tax avoidance as EBT's are.A player should pay 50% tax but with image rights only pays 26% and Celtic have been using contracts like that with players (allegedly). So all you mhanky cunts on here don't laugh too hard yet as your club maybe one of the next on HMRC's "hitlist".

What busts my ass more than anything is the fact HMRC never said a damn thing understandably nobody thought there was a problem then nearly a decade later wham there you go soddin' great bill and if thats not enough we are going to hammer you with stonking amounts of interest, even though we never asked you for any money and just for good measure here are some outrageous penalties. All together that should easily put you out of busuness and be a deterent to other companies.

I wonder if perhaps gers had invested in one of these alleged business lunches if perhaps rangers might have secured a sweetheart deal too.
