CoatbridgeBear
RANGERS players don’t owe the club a thing. Not after taking huge wage cuts and doing all they could to clean up a mess they didn’t create. No, their conscience is clear. But if the SPL kick Gers out of the league and they drop into the First Division I’d urge the Ibrox stars to do one more thing. And that’s give the club a year.I would. If I was one of the players there now I wouldn’t walk out and move elsewhere.I’d look at the situation and take the view that the club needs me. More than ever, so do the fans.Players have every right to look after themselves. It’s a short career and I don’t blame anyone for making the most out of it while they can.And if Rangers were relegated to the Third Division I’d be telling them to get out and quick. But a season in the First Division ISN’T the end of the world. If the players are kept on the same contracts they’re on now then why can’t they sit tight? The fans will stick by Gers. I don’t go along with the theory that they’ll turn their backs on the club if they are kicked out of the top flight.I think the Ibrox punters will sell the place out next season regardless of which division they are playing in.But they need a team. They need a team capable of winning promotion and coming right back up at the first opportunity. They can’t do that with under-18s so if I was in charge at the club I’d be urging the first-team players there now to hold firm.It would maybe just help galvanise the club.Right now, with everything going against Rangers, the last thing the supporters need is to see the likes of Steven Naismith, Steven Davis and Allan McGregor walk out the door for no transfer fee.Don’t get me wrong. If they do get out I don’t think anyone could blame them. They’ve had to put up with loads these past few months and maybe some of them are sick of it.If they’re allowed to move on for nowt then that’s up to them.I don’t think there is a Gers fan out there who could slaughter a player if he opted to jump ship the first chance he got.I’d just like them to say they were prepared to give the club 12 months to sort things out. To come back stronger.I genuinely believe that’s what I’d do if I was in their shoes. If my contract was the same and I wasn’t losing a huge amount of money then I think I would tell the manager and the chairman that he could count on me to help them out.I wouldn’t be looking forward to the First Division because with the greatest respect it’s not the best standard of football in the world. But I’d grit my teeth, roll up my sleeves and set about scoring a barrowload of goals to secure promotion as early as possible.Rangers need that kind of gesture, otherwise they could find themselves in that division for a while. That’s IF they’re kicked out of the top league.Truth be told, I’m still not convinced they will be.I know clubs like Hearts and Dundee United have already stated they will not be voting for the Rangers newco to take the place of the old company. That’s their call and their right.I just don’t understand it.Seems to me it’s clubs cutting off their noses to spite their face.Surely they cannot believe it’s a good thing for Scottish football to have Rangers booted out of the SPL.Motherwell and Inverness say they’re going to let their fans decide how they vote, almost passing the buck in many ways.If they vote to hammer Gers then they’ll say it wasn’t their choice, but their supporters. But I’m not convinced they will actually go that way anyway.Everyone seems to think the punters will rub their hands in glee at the prospect of Rangers being demoted. I’m not so sure.As far as I can ever see, fans at the smaller clubs in the top flight love nothing more than going to places like Ibrox. That’s what it’s all about. When the Old Firm clubs come to their grounds they see it as an opportunity to get one over on one of the big boys. That’s when the TV cameras turn up with a bigger crowd. If it’s Dundee who take their place is that as exciting? I don’t think it is.Listen, I’ve said all along that Rangers MUST be punished for the way they’ve gone about their business in recent years. They can’t expect to get off scot-free.But what that punishment is, I’m not so sure. Maybe it is going down to the First Division where they can regroup and start again.A year isn’t a long time but it’s long enough. The club could regain its dignity and come back as the proud club it once was, not the laughing stock it has become.Read more: http://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/scotsol/homepage/sport/spl/4389813/Stars-mustnt-do-walking-away.html#ixzz1ykwiJPEX

gordonb23
Hate to say it but the jake actually made a bit of sense there. Only thing that's annoying me is this first division talk. For me it should be the SPL or third division. How can the vote for Rangers to stay in the SPL be fair if clubs don't know if we'll be gone for 3 years or 1? The biggest sports story in Scotland right now is us. Putting my maths cap on here it appears its pretty straight forward what it has to do with him.Secondly, he actually makes some good points and is suggesting that the players should stay with us if we drop down to Division 1... yet all because he played for them his opinion isn't valid. Sometimes it feels like some of our fans are becoming too obsessed with hating celtic than loving our own club.
