Dear Mr ,

Thank you for your time yesterday and for your note regarding Alex Thomson's tweet. Please let me reassure you again that I will not pass on your details.

I want to explain how this situation occurred. Whilst researching a blog about the many videos and spoof images that have been created and posted online about Rangers FC, Alex Thomson posted a link to an animated image.

Alex has recently reported extensively on the Rangers story and interpreted this image in terms of the current financial woes of the club. It featured a statue of John Greig, who as you will know resigned as a Rangers director in October, "walking away". However, this statue was built to commemorate the 66 who died in the 1971 disaster and we now understand that some people have been offended that this animation uses that statue as part of a spoof.

Furthermore, there was some confusion over his tweets which were intended to clarify the situation – he was trying to point out that he wasn't aware that this image could be interpreted in this way. To be clear, he was familiar with the memorial statue – but he did not expect the image to be interpreted as a comment on the Ibrox Disaster.

Alex was very concerned that he may have tweeted something that could be interpreted as offensive, so when this was pointed out to him, he immediately deleted the tweet, and the link and issued an unreserved apology. He has since followed this apology with a more comprehensive explanation and apology here:

On behalf of Channel 4 News and Alex Thomson, I would like to apologise sincerely for any offence caused. We are always grateful for feedback, so thank you for taking the time to contact us.

Best wishes

The fact he was laughing about it that afternoon suggests his apology is not exactly heartfelt.

Wonder how a politician, who had made a gaffe, lied about the context then was found chuckling away after apologising would be treated on C4 news?

I believe he knew about the memorial.

I believe he just didnt connect the dots as to what it would mean to us.

His immediate removal of it when somebody said something backs that up in my opinion.

This is a man who tells everyone about the awards he has won for his investigative work and on his reporting...........now I would not call what he said a bad judgement based on what he does for a living...Also this is the man that said he was threatened by a journalist in Glasgow(fuck me , you mean there is a bluenose one) and Strathclyde Police say the they can find no evidence to back up his claim.

possibly, but if he has "reported extensively on the Rangers story" then, why would he have "interpreted this image in terms of the current financial woes of the club" to me! it just shows that he is a tim and thouhgt it was funny to impress his tim mates.

This guy should really stay the fuck out of all this. I mean why has he taken such an interest in this. On more than one occasion he has mouthed off or posted something that is alot of shit or "was mis-understood". Like so many unfortunately he is trying to gain publicity out of sticking the knife into us at this time. Hopefully if we ignore the cunt he will disappear back to Afghanistan or anywhere else.

I despise this worthless excuse for a journalist, he has no credibility, and never should after he was made to look the idiot he clearly is live on Radio.

An apology isnt good enough, I'd like to see channel 4 doing the right thing and sacking this idiot.
