Are torrents a thing of the past?

Things don't appear to be as I remember them in this particular niche market, so to speak.

Are they now effectively defunct? What is the new common standard?

How do you remember them?

I'm led to believe they're readily available and - if taken from reliable sources - safer and better quality than ever. They are also illegal so please, for the sake of the children, never use these evil givers of free stuff. Ever.

I always used to use torrent but i don't as much now.

I got a premium account to rapidshare and found a forum that posts links to movies, tv etc that are on RS.

I actually prefer it that way now even though i have to pay. Because if you want a torrent with few seeders you'll never get it or it will take ages bvut with the RS links they will always be active (until they get deleted) and they always go at your top download speed.

Takes no time at all now to download the HD versions of LOTR which are 16gb on 30mb.

I usually do this when the US tv season is back in full swing. Great when things are split into multiple files as well. One 1GB file at top speed or two 500's, twice as fast. Multiple downloads a plus.

You nasty man. I would never use the likes of Rapidsearch to find illegal files. :sherlock:

I've been using newsgroups for the past 2 years. I have to pay a monthly subscription but I'm able to max out my connection using it and it's more secure than using torrents. One thing I've been finding though recently is companies are becoming much quicker at killing files on newsgroups especially UFC.

I can see torrents becoming a thing of the past in the next few years with the way internet privacy is going but something else will no doubt pop up.

They are also illegal ...

Torrents are not illegal, they remain an excellent way to distribute data in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

Some people use them for sharing copyrighted material, but there are many, many legitimate uses for them (many online games, for example, have torrents for their clients, etc).

If I were inclined to break copyright laws or other region blocks for live TV and catch up services, or to get around university or other restrictive firewalls, I might be inclined to use a VPN tunnel provided by companies like "Strong VPN". If I were inclined to actually seek to access sites that are blocked in the UK and I didn't have a VPN, I might look for organisations such as pirateparty.

Of course I am not so inclined.

The specific sites are about useless, you never know which one's going down on a given day. Just Google "whatever torrent" and you'll get what you need. Effectively what those sites do anyway, except for the niche-specific ones ie- fonts and whatnot. 00000042.gif

Chrome also has a useful app,, torrent turbo search,,, just type in the name of a film etc, and it links you to about 5 or 6 active sites.

Kickasstorrents is probably one of the best right now as it has an active community that all comment on quality etc.

Seedpeer, isohunt are another couple,,, and torrentinvite.com is a private one that offers an invite to demonoid

Cheers for that one. Just found an album I'd lost years ago and couldn't find on other sites.

I've not used a public tracker in about 6 years. Get yourselves onto Torrentbytes or TorrentLeech which are private trackers and you'll get content fast and it'll max out your download speed.

Demonoid was like this, till everyone and their grandmother got a hold of an account.
