TheMoonlighter 499
Needing a bit of help from our Ayrshire Brothers and Sisters. We're currently researching the path the Rangers took in season 1876-77 to reach our historic first Scottish Cup Final which will be a thread on it's own over the coming weeks. Teams , locations of fixtures etc.On 9th December 1876 Rangers travelled to Mauchline and won 3-0 with goals coming from Sandy Marshall, Peter Campbell and James Watson.I've been looking into the history of Mauchline FC who played their games at Connel Park but the Club and ground both seem to have slipped off the map.Would any Bears from the area be able to shed some light on this ?Any help would be much appreciated. Here'as the match report. julescotia 11,407
Tried a little for you.Glenafton used to be based in Connel Park in the early years (dont know if its the same park)Glens link stating this ..... http://glenaftonfc.com/loch-park/Just google map Connel Park for the areaThis link shows an idea of where the football field was situated ... http://members.tripod.com/bob_newcumnock/rows1/Connelparkx.html .....Just look at the bottom picture.A pic I got of it from google maps .....And to throw another spanner into the works .... Lanemark FC (now dissolved) played there too .... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanemark_F.C.Like I said, Dont know if it's the same park, but to have 2-3 Connel Parks in a 3-4 mile area seems unlikely. Ronzer62 1
Being a former Mauchline resident I can confirm Connell Park was where Mauchline Senior team played during 1870's through to late 1890's.A housing estate now covers the ground. My father played for 2 local juvenile sides during the 30's with Connel park their home pitch.I note a Smith in the team who played Rangers. He in fact became Dr Smith and practised in the Dundee area. He also played 10 times for Scotland. First 5 when playing for Mauchline. He also was the first player to score a hat-trick in a Scottish Cup final whilst playing for Queens Park.Reason Mauchline had a senior side was due to high level of industry in and around the village. "Boxworks" were the main industry. Ornate boxes such as those used for snuff with decorative covers were produced. Now widely sought by collectors. Football was a means o f providing interes and sport for the workers.Mauchline also won the first Ayrshire Cup and actually reached the last 6 of the Scottish Cup in 1877-78 season losing to Renton after a protest, having won first match 7-0. Do not no why there was a protest in first match. Interesting to note there was no 32 to 16 to 8 to 4 to 2 final teams. number entered was then halved and so on. Therefore last 6 produced 3 winners of which one received a bye into the final. Mauchline were so close. If only.Best of luck with your researchRgdsRonzer
