elephants stoned 2,994
In my view yes Ally is the greatest ever Ranger, but i suppose its subjective as some might say Greig, others Bill Struth or Walter Smith, all great Men and all deserving of the highest praise. paisleyroad 894
I think greatest should be playing ability, while Ally was a superb goal scorer, roll model & a magnificent defender of our club, I don't think he was the greatest Ranger. On a personal note, it was Cooper for me. Lauder1872 10
Bill Struth for me but very subjective.Ally is definitely a modern-day Mr Rangers.
elephants stoned 2,994
If its playing ability i would go for Laudrup, Baxter or Cooper but Greatest Ranger means to me somebody who devoted themselves to the club and achieved great things be it as a player or manager. paisleyroad 894
If its achievement then I'd go for Bill Struth. What was the criteria for the voting, was it playing ability or overall?Greig is still worthy IMO

ZZed 4,560
I think that we are lucky to have had some fantastic men involved in our club. We don’t have 1 greatest ever but have several of the highest calibre asked for.
Ricky_ 893
Bill Struth stands alone
Thermopylae 15,288
I think Struth is a great call although I would say it has to be Willie Waddell because he served the club with distinction on the park, won the CWC as manager and then presided over the building of the 3 new stands when he went upstairs
JohnHardie 1,405
With absolute respect to everyone's posts, the original question wasn't really "who is". It's more "is Ally a better Ranger than Greig". I feel he is. The biggest goal scorer, the man that stood by us when others fled. I take 0 away from the Greatest Ranger, but I really do think Ally fills his boots now.
Non_Sucumbi 876
John Greig holds the title. The result of a fans vote in IIRC 1999.If you held the vote today would he still win????
jack1690 793
I respect everyones opinion regarding this. But for me, its still John Greig.
McBoyd 355
Tom Vallance? Did so much for the club over the years!

Zappa6995 3,808
No !I think you will find that it is John Greig.
Mikhailichenko 90
It is a bit of a strange title. What happens when a greater Ranger comes along? Does JG get the title of The Greatest Ever Ranger unceremoniously taken from him and passed to another? Do we have to wait until JG passes away to do it? There is no doubt in my mind that AM is a Great Ranger but is he the greatest? All our legends are great Rangers so I feel it's unfair to give the title to just one.Maybe having different categories such as Greatest Manager, Greatest Player, Greatest Servant would help but we could still end up with the same issues I have stated above. The most dignified way of resolving this would be if JG decides someone else is worthy of his title but I don't think it would be fair to ask or expect him to do it. Big Al 55 9,539
To me it means a lifetime devoted to the club, its about way way more than playing ability. Currently John Greig thoroughly deserves the title IMO , although give Ally another couple of decades :superally:

Thermopylae 15,288
Tom Vallance? Did so much for the club over the years!David Meiklejohn too is largely forgotten these days ... apparently he worked very well with Bill Struth
DarcheVinny 1,003
Despite the fact that Greig has the title, it is an unanswerable question!Alan Morton would have to be considered as a contender, although his Rangers playing career wasn't as long as Greig's!Meiklejohn?Willie Thornton? You just can't answer it with one name! A far fairer system would be to select the greatest Ranger from each decade.
