DarcheVinny 1,003
Following on from the discussion in this thread, I wanted to suggest a few names for the greatest Rangers, by each decade. I don't think anyone could dispute John Greig as the greatest Rangers of the 70's, captaining the team to the Cup Winner's Cup in '72, well overdue title win in '75 and trebles in 75/76 and 77/78. But was Greig the greatest Ranger of the 60's as well?I think it is impossible to say that John Greig is the greatest ever Ranger, as the situation is different in every era.I don't want to start a poll just yet, as I will miss out some glaringly obvious names if I attempt to do that on my own! It's impossible to define what makes a great Ranger, but check out my suggestions for each decade below and feel free to suggest your own list, with a little reason why if you wish to do so - especially for the more historic decades. Try not to suggest more than two names per decade, as we'll have too many!A lot has to be based on what we have read/heard/learnt as the decades go back, but I still think we can come up with 1/2 nominations for each decade, before considering starting a poll. If there is enough interest, I could write a full feature on 'RangersMedia's Greatest Ever Rangers'.2000's - Barry Ferguson and David Weir1990's - Ally McCoist and Richard Gough1980's - Davie Cooper and Bobby Russell1970's - John Greig1960's - John Greig and Ronnie McKinnon1950's - George Young and Bobby Brown1940's - Willie Thornton and Jock Shaw1930's - Bob McPhail and Willie Waddell1920's - Alan Morton and David Meiklejohn1910's - Jimmy Gordon1900's - RC Hamilton and Alex Smith1890's - Nicol Smith and John McPherson1880's - John Cameron1870's - Tom VallanceRangersPedia and the official Rangers Hall of Fame helped me fill any gaps in my knowledge. TAFKA 545
I can only go back as far as the Sixties and contenders from then would be Baxter, Henderson and Wilson alongside Greig - put me down for Greig and Baxter.Seventies - Tom Forsyth, Sandy JardineEighties - glad you gave a mention to the under-rated Russell and of course, Coops. But how can you leave out Butcher? Butch/Coops for me.Nineties - Gough and McCoist all the wayNoughties - Ferguson and WeirGreat, but frustrating, thread.Bastard! DronganExile 84
I think you've given yourself an impossible task, not so much who to include but who to leave out.Durrant from the 80s?Laudrup from the 90s?Very difficult. Good luck figuring this one out.

Stoorie 1,090
McCloy? Nurse! Nurse! One of them has got out. Ok, maybe I'm biased but this from wiki.....He won multiple honours in his Rangers career: two Scottish League titles, four Scottish League Cups, four Scottish Cups and Rangers' only ever European trophy, the 1972 UEFA Cup Winners Cup. He was one of only five players who featured in every match of the latter campaign, alongside Sandy Jardine, Willie Mathieson, Alex MacDonald and Colin Stein. He made 535 appearances for Rangers, and played for Scotland on four occasions.535 appearances, sixteen years and four, yes FOUR caps. He's up there for me.
elephants stoned 2,994
We could easily add another half a dozen or more to some catagoreys, especialy the 9 in a row years, and what about managers as neither William Struth or Walter Smith played for Rangers but their contributions to the club are in many ways unrivaled. Greig is the only option for 70's for me.

There are loads of staff who have made incredible contributions. You have to really look at the categories I listed above. Only Durrant can come close to Ally and Goughie in 90's as far as I'm concerned.

Obviously I didnt see the older players, but I was brought up with the scum doing 9iar & didnt see Rangers win the league til I was 18. (by the way my oldest son was 18 before he saw us lose the league!!)Anyone who saw Greig almost carrying Rangers on his back through the 60s & 70s would not grudge him his title as Greatest Ranger. allanh91 75
Some people wont be happy with the inclusion of Barry Ferguson Fergie has many critics, but for me, he was a captain who led our club with style. Came through the youth system and made his place in a multi-million pound, multinational squad, had a fantastic 5 years between 98 and 2003, and came back to do a solid job after. Was never as good as he was in the first spell, but still a rightful starting player every week.Wore the jersey with pride and wore his heart on his sleeve. Redwhiteandblue 3,330
IMO Tom Vallance should go down as the greatest ever.Rangers wouldn't be what they are today without him. He was the one that drove us from small boys kicking about a ball, to the world famous club we are today.Without him, there is a very good chance we wouldn't have the Rangers as we know them. You really need to read our early history to know just hat he done for this club.In my mind, he is the greatest ever Ranger. No one comes close. John Greig wouldn't have got the chance to be voted as the greatest ever if it wasn't for Mr Vallance.
