It's high time John Greig was back for good at Ibrox Stadium.

The following article comes from the Matchday Programme of January 2nd 1991, the 20th anniversary of the disaster :

"Team captain on that tragic day, John Greig, now the club's Public Relations Executive, recalled the events that will remain in his memory forever.

"I sustained an injury during the match," said Greig.

"And it was only some 20 or 30 minutes after the final whistle that I realised the extent of the tragedy. Most of the players left the Stadium knowing something had happened. I stayed behind for treatment, but when I went down the tunnel and saw all those poor people that had died covered up, that was when it hit me."

"The feeling of helplessness surrounded most of the people at Ibrox, and it was left to the professionals to get on with helping those injured."

"I think I can say, probably on behalf of everybody here at Rangers, that will remain the saddest day not only inour life-span, but ever in the history of the club."

"Willie Waddell contacted all of the bereaved families to ask permission for players and officials from the club to attend each and every one of the funerals. An absolutely horrendous time because each individual at the club felt it had happened to their own familes."

"One thing I'll never forget was the next time we played at Ibrox against Dundee United on the 16th of January was the atmosphere inside the park. It was the strangest came I ever played in."

"From a personal point of view it's something I'll never forget. It's always at the back of my mind when I take people around the new stadium we have rebuilt that it has been built in memory for those unfortunate supporters and their families"

"I sincerely hope that we never see the likes of that day at Ibrox or any other ground again."

and

"This quote is from John Greig, speaking after being vote the Greatest Ranger Ever on the 21st March 1999 :

"The disaster will never leave me. Never a day goes by that it doesn't go through my mind. I still get letters from guys who have never been back to Ibrox for a game since that day. I have taken some of them around the stadium for them to see what it is like now. The new stadium is, in fact, a testament to those who died. In the trophy room there is a beautiful picture of the old stadium up on the wall. For me, it is one of the most important things in that room and I make a point of showing it to the people who go there. It's important, especially for the young fans who have only seen the new stadium, that they know the history of this club, where we came from and why we came from that point."

John MUST be brought back into the Ibrox Family.... Mr Green are you listening ?

What say you fellow fans..........

(no idea as to why the writings went small? anyone know how to re-size ?)

John Greig is obviously a club legend, immersed in the tradition of our club. My take on it though is that although he was in no way culpable for the actions of Whyte, I think he feels a degree of responsibility. He obviously saw something was up hence why he left but he either couldnt or wasnt able to divulge what he knew to the public and so there may be a sense of awkwardness there.

He always will be welcome back in my book in any role he wishes.

Perhaps something fairly token is fine but I don't see the need for another directorship, we have Walter playing that kind of role.

Agreed . He's a legend but what would he actually do and what is he needed for . Can't have people on the payroll doing fuck all let alone a director

I had the good fortune to meet John Greig several years ago when we were both sitting in a waiting room. He was happy to chat and came across as a very down to earth, decent and genuine man and an excellent ambassador for our club.

I've heard different views on his way with fans. I've met him twice and cant say he was overly nice, even told me if I wanted an autograph dedicated to someone I was to write it on myslef :anguish::lol: Also saw him after the game last week walk out of the door and ignore people wanting sigs. You must have caught him on a good day

Why have him on the payroll? If he wants back let him come to ibrox and give him the dignity he deserves.... But hey let's keep wages out of this!

in his last stint he was very quiet in the press now i am not sure if that was what he was told to be or if it was himself that was that way so i would say no directorship but by all means in hospitality where he would go down a storm with the fans

I don't think anyone finds him culpable for the Whyte era' many find him culpable for the Murray era when he was a director who never put his head on murrays chopping board in return for the coin

I don't like him. Met him once and was a prick to be honest.

Thought he really let us down through the Whyte saga, where as Sandy Jardine really stepped up.

Also, although he may 'officially' be the greatest ever Ranger, he's not for me. Ally is.

Wouldn't want him on the board, hospitality role is fine though.

I think it would be very good to have John Greig back in some meaningful capacity. A non-exec Director perhaps so that his football knowledge and that of Walter and Jim T could add to the weight of knowledge that Charles and the Board could draw on when league reconstruction stuff gets a bit more serious, and as bridge-builder to clubs who are not in the active harm camp.

It's probably been asked a thousand times before but I'll ask again, why, in his honour, is one of the stands not named after John Greig? Ormaybe Murray Park should be renamed Greig Park?
