Green to rename Stands?

Heres Hoping.

The Pioneers, Struth, Symon and Smith for me. Too early to name anything after the greatest Ranger ever McCoist.

Who should it be?

http://davidleggat-l...blogspot.co.uk/

THE men who form new Rangers regime are determined to keep the club’s great traditions and legendary names alive, even when a sponsor’s name is attached to Ibrox Stadium.

For I can exclusively reveal that there have already been talks inside the Blue Room about renaming three of the Stands and the Milngavie training complex.

And my information is that the men running Rangers are keen to involve supporters in choosing new names for the Copland, Broomloan and Govan Stands, as well as Murray Park.

The men inside the Blue Room are well aware that there has been some mumping and moaning among some sections of the rank and file over the delay to renaming Murray Park following the Charles Green pledge in the summer to do so.

However, the stark fact is, the truth of the matter is, Charles Green and his two other executive directors Imran Ahmad and Brian Stockbridge have had a lot on their plate in the last few months.

Coining in the cash needed to build a new and bright future for Rangers has been at the top of their agenda and the Brian Stockbridge blueprint for the share issue worked a treat.

But there have been other things on the Blue Room agenda too. Notably the continuing fight against those who want to harm Rangers, the many Rangers haters among the SPL clubs, among those clubs’ bigoted supporters and even in the ranks of many sections of the media, with the overwhelming majority of the Scottish press having abandoned even the slightest pretence of even handed coverage, professionalism and fairness when Rangers are the story.

However, Charles Green, I am told, has not forgotten his Murray Park promise. And now he has expressed interest in broadening the idea to include Ibrox.

I understand that one idea being talked about is to gather a list of legendary names from Rangers glorious 140-years of trophy winning history, players and managers, and to ask the supporters to vote on whose names they want to see adorning the three stands built from 1978 until 1981 as the brainchild of Willie Waddell.

Which surely makes the choice for one stand – my personal favourite would be the Govan Stand - to be named after The Deedle as a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much to Rangers and the Rangers story as a player, manager and visionary administrator.

Another great name from the club’s playing and managerial past, Scot Symon, is one which should not be forgotten. Unfortunately Scot Symon’s contribution as a manager is now largely ignored inside Ibrox and the wee room named for him in a corner of the Govan Stand is now reduced to the ranks of being no more than a cupboard for dumping old furniture.

I was appalled to see this insult to a truly great Ranger on the day when I was there for the launch of my book, GREAT SCOT, THE JAMES SCOTLAND SYMON STORY, my contribution to restoring Symon’s name to a prominent position within the Rangers tradition.

My own preference would be to see the Milngavie training complex renamed for Symon, for Scot Symon was a man who believed in youth and who promoted young players, reared in the Rangers tradition, from Alex Scott, through Ronnie McKinnon, John Greig and Willie Johnston, right up to Sandy Jardine in his last year as boss.

Of course everyone will have their favourite name from the past and I just hope that past will encompass those from bygone days or yore as well as the more recent past. Heroes such as Davie Meiklejohn, Bob McPhail and one of the founders, Moses McNeill.

A committee of great Rangers men, such as Greig and Jardine and Walter Smith, plus Bobby Brown, could be formed to draw up a list for the supporters to vote for.

And here’s a wee suggestion to the men in the Blue Room. Let’s not confine any poll to being on-line. Postcards could be handed out to fans as they click through the turnstiles and boxes made available for them to put those postcards in.

Everyone will have their own ideas, but my choice for the Govan Stand would be the Willie Waddell Stand, for the Copland, the Moses McNeill Stand and for the Broomloan, the Davie Meiklejohn Stand. The Club Deck, above the Bill Struth Main Stand, could be included too and named for Tiger Shaw, with the training complex renamed Scot Symon Park.

And here is an extra wee touch. The men in the Blue Room now only use that on match days, with the day to day running of the club conducted from offices inside the Argyll Suite.

So they should make the approach road imposing and redolent of Rangers by landscaping the area in red white and blue and naming it for another giant of a True Blue. Jock Wallace Way sounds good

Let's take this a level further, for example the Press gantry could be named 'The Inky Tradesman's Entrance'.

Isn't it amazing how in an article ostensibly about the renaming of our stands the bold Leggo manages to get a plug in for his Scott Symon book. :pipe:

....a complete coincidence I'm sure. :sherlock:

PS. Speaking of coincidences......there are several renaming (and name-calling) issues being discussed in the latest issue of Number One Fanzine, out this weekend at Ibrox and noted in the 'pinned' thread at the top of the Bears Den.

I like the way we have the "Bill Struth Main Stand" and feel that should continue. For example, the "John Greig Broomloan Stand" or the "Walter Smith Govan Stand"

I don't think the old names should ever be removed. I guess it's much like how we may be going to the "Sports Direct Ibrox Stadium" soon.

Leggo has plugged several projects he's been involved in....as mentioned, coincidentally, in the latest issue of Number One, out this weekend at Ibrox. :000000082:

How about us giving a name to other parts of the stadium.

For example, the food outlet stalls. We could have one as the "Barry Ferguson Monster Munch Emporium", or maybe the "Kris Boyd Who-Ate-All-The-Pies Stall".

The toilets could be given names too. "Pishers". "The Shit Stop".

Or for any Gay Bears out there, "Pink Oboe Central"!! :D

Let's go the whole hog and give names to each and every step, seat, nut & bolt within the stadium

I bags mine now. "The Canadian Bacon Health & Safety Equipment Storage Room"! :D
