Berra and Zaliukas

McCoist eyes up defensive duo Zaliukas and Berra as Gers axe Bocanegra and Goian.

Ally McCoist will attempt to bolster his defence by examining moves for Marius Zaliukas and Christophe Berra after Ibrox salary space was freed up on Saturday.

Rangers confirmed that the last of the big earners, Carlos Bocanegra and Dorin Goian, had been removed from the payroll with a year of their contracts remaining and were free to find new clubs.

The £18,000-a-week duo were out on loan last term to Racing Santander and Spezia respectively.

Centre-half now becomes McCoist’s planning priority for the Second Division campaign and, with Zaliukas set to be cut loose by Hearts administrators ahead of the expiry of his contract at the end of August, Rangers will be in pole position to pounce.

McCoist has identified the Lithuanian as the rugged presence he requires on the road back to the Scottish top flight. Berra, meanwhile, is free to move from relegated Wolves but could have options in the Championship.

Zaliukas managed only eight minutes of action in May after damaging ankle ligaments at Tannadice on February 9. On the same day Berra, 27, made a last club appearance before being axed by then Molineux boss Dean Saunders when contract talks broke down.

Bocanegra will return to the United States to play club football for the first time since leaving Chicago to join Fulham in 2004. Goian wants to find a club in England.

Where's this from?

'The £18,000-a-week duo'

If this is true this place will go into meltdown...

Thats Goian and Boca not Berra and Zaliukas!

The whole quote!!

"The £18,000-a-week duo were out on loan last term to Racing Santander and Spezia respectively."

I know.

Get ready... when some people wake up and see they were on "£18,000 a week" it's going to cause mayhem.

This falls in line with what most people thought. I believed we'd save the best part of 2m if we moved them on. This was the justification in bringing all the new Players. I hope we dont sign Both Players mentioned.

It is taken from the Mail

I hope we sign a quality cb, do not think we need two.

Why??

Would u not like to win the scottish or league cup and be the first 2nd division side to do so??

Hypothetically if we get 5 home games, 2 in 1 cup and 3 in the other with an average attendance of 35000 at £15 per ticket we would take in £525000 per game. Over the 5 games you would generate £2625000 split down the middle with the other teams it would give us a total of £1312500 not counting what we would make on food etc.

Signing 2 good quality CB's on £6000 p/w each at combined cost of £624000 per year is easily justified!

I hope to fuck that it was 18k a week for both of them, boca on 12k and goian on 6k.

As for berra and zaliukas, not the best CBs we are ever going to have but would do us for the next couple of years and lets be honest berra is a current internationalist and thats what Allys after. Fuck knows why as our games wont be cancelled/rearranged due to international matches, leaving us with a problem when they do get called up.

Would love to mate, if two CB's could make it happen then yes, by all means sign them, but we can't sustain the size of squad we have for to long, there has to be some pruning.

Totally agree with you there, cannot understand why we have not got shot of perry, hegarty, the Brazilian, Hutton and Naismith, what a shower of shite! I would give faure another chance with a Prs-season behind him.

What defence would we have if the 1st three were binned? Got to bring in players before looking at getting rid of whatever ones we do have.
