DelightfulDennis 123
I think Numan was not too bad to be fair. Gio too. Oh, n Albertz was awrite. Not too bad?Numan was a class act. A far better player than Robertson. It's not even close.
DelightfulDennis 123
Meant to say it was Beasley doing thisYep, I remember we had a short period when we played Novo on the left and Beasley on the right. It seemed to really work. We gave Dundee Utd a doing away from home. Novo whipped a good ball in with his left foot for Kenny for one of the goals. bs1982 22
It is absolutely crazy how long it is since we have had a regular in the left mid or left wing slot. Ever since Walter came back we seem to have tried everyone there and no-one has been able to hold down the position for any spell of games. I am probably missing quite a few but all of these have played at some stage:This seasonTempleton, Smith, Macleod, Mackay, Little, CrawfordLast SeasonTempleton, Mackay, Aird, Shiels2011Ortiz, Bedoya, Wylde, Papac, Wallace, McKay, Celik, Naismith, Aluko, KerkarPrevious seasonsWhittaker, Miller, Lafferty, Weiss, Diouf, Fleck, Adam, Rothen, Gow, Novo, Beasley, McCulloch, Aaron

It's not even close. He was a better player, but you're doing Robertson an injustice. Robertson was a cracking player aswell. Infact, our left back position has pretty much been like our GK position in our history. Solid. Robertson>Numan>Papac>Wallace.

There's no shame in that though. Numan shone in major international tournaments. He was a top left back. And to think Papac actually arrived here as a centre back...What does that tell you?It can pay off playing players in different positions. There are many players who can play more than one position.

The same groans we hear today about players not playing in their 'natural' positions were also heard back then regarding Papac being played at left back. I remember it well. Turned out to be a master stroke from Walter.

rangersross 6,530
As people have said, I really hope Templeton makes the position his own. It seems to be a problem position for us, with the recent exceptions of Weiss and Aluko.Another one, albeit fleetingly, was Lee Martin.
DelightfulDennis 123
So it worked for Papac so it's going to work for Little, Smith, McCulloch, Faure, Law, Crawford, Templeton etc etc then? Is that what you're saying? Steven Whittaker is naturally a right back but he also performs very well at left back.Steven Naismith was naturally a striker but also performed well at right mid. Actually, moving him to right mid got the best out of him.Papac was naturally a central defender but moving to left back got the best out of him.Novo was naturally a striker but also played well wide left and wide right.Beasley was naturally a let winger but also played well on the right. There's numerous other examples throughout world football.A player doesn't have to have one position. The modern day player tends to play more than one position.McCulloch is actually the perfect example. A player who has been used in a variety of roles throughout his career.
