Memories of Norrie Martin

The Widow's Son

Remember him as a good Ranger. Recall that he played outfield once in an Old Firm game (Glasgow Cup perchance) after sustaining an injury. Came in after Billy Ritchie and held down the spot until Gerry Neef took over. Played in a few top games in his time - the 1967 Cup Winners Final - but don't think he ever played for Scotland (can't confirm this). I met him in the early 1980's at his hotel in Ayrshire and he was a true gentleman. Wonder where he is now. If any bear can oblige, I'd like to learn about his appearances - beyond my cable tow at the moment.

Correct he played outfield in a Glasgow Cup final against Celtic when he had a hand injury. Davie Provan played in goal and Norrie played up front. Celtic won 2-1 just !

He was signed as 3rd- choice keeper to,George Niven and Billy Ritchie in 1958,made his debut in a League cup tie at Tyncastle 23rd aug 1958 he had to come off after fracturing his skull. He didn't play for 1st team again for 2 years and in 1965 at pittodrie he again was carried of with a fractured skull .He was 1st team regular by 1966-67 and played in infamous cup tie at Berwick also played in ECW final. He played 110 times (41 clean sheets) and His last game was against Hibs at Ibrox in oct 1969 .Willie Waddell released him on a free transfer in 1970.despite being at Ibrox for 12 yrs with Rangers he never won any honours and never capped for Scotland, things would surely have turned out different but for fracturing his skull twice

Gerry Neef became friends with my family, because he stayed along the road. It's was before my time, but from what I heard he was a nice guy.

That is quite a story. Cheers.

And in fact Rangers played with only 9 men for 15 minutes of the second as Hynd and McLean were injured late in the first half with Hynd being carried off and not coming back on, McLean resumed after treatment to his injury, Rangers finished playing with 10 men !

Can't find any record of him playing either for Scotland or the Scottish League team !
