WadeWilson 4,670
I know it has to have been posted before... at least I know the home leg has been.But... We should never underestimate what an achievement this was by Souness and the team. We beat the greatest team certainly in terms of East European history of all time... and one of the top, top, top teams of the moment... you only need to look at the amount of players that they had in the USSR teams of Mexico 1986 and Euro 1988 (they reached the final).Oleg fucking Blokhin was still up front at the time for fuck sake! And anyone who knows their onions will tell you how good Vasily Rats was... They were a magnificent team. Souness took the hems in the side of the pitch... and the rest is history.Enjoy my fellow Bears ad take a break from the boardroom.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTVpy7JcPJE PS - A couple of well-known faces are playing against us. Two more Soviet legends born in the Ukraine.

I wonder!
gmcf 35,519
Remember taking afternoon off work to go to Ibrox to watch away leg - they wheeled in two big screens. But yes, that was some team we beat at the time. I'm sure that was before Russia broke up so they were still Russian then. ( I think ! )
WadeWilson 4,670
A severely-mulleted Nicky Walker being given the flowers... watch out, he might drop them! One of ED's mate is Nicky. What happened to that thread asking for his ban to be lifted?

So was Ukraine. That is why I commented on it, If you called Oleg or Alexei a 'Russian' during their time here, they would have lamped you. Little turncoat that he was.
WadeWilson 4,670
You're right. It was the USSR.They had some great, great players and a lot of population to choose from. I would say that they under-achieved through the years, 1960 Euros excepted. The Black Spider is still considered the best keeper of all time... but i never saw him, so I will stick with Goram. gmcf 35,519
Was there also another name for them ( the national team ) ? Seem to recall Scotland playing them in a European Championships I think in 1992 . Beat them 3-0, if I'm right. CIS maybe ? Or something like that. gmcf 35,519
Enjoyed watching that BMR. Had a laugh at Ally beating Oleg , tho he should have scored. Interesting the mixture of youth and experience. Lucky if Fergie and ID had reached 20 then, surrounded by experienced pros like Nicholl, Cohen, Butcher and Roberts. Dugsy 44
Was in the West Enclosure that night, the atmosphere was unbelievable. I remember ' Mad Dog' MacGregor doing Igor Belanov early doors, IIRC he was European footballer of the year at the time and arguably their best player. He got carried off and the rest is history. Or something like that. The Soviet Union disolved in 1991, but in terms of Internation football it continued under the CIS name. This mainly happened because the Soviet Union team had alrady earned a spot in the 92 Euros. The CIS then became the Russian national football team. Interesting stuff. I love looking at history through popular culture like football!
Turnberry18 3,204
Derek Ferguson was my favourite player in those days. Brings back memories.

The Commonwealth of Independent States played at Euro '92. Kuznetsov and Mikhailichenko were in the line-up who suffered a drubbing at the hands of Scotland. Quite a scalp that was but the fact that they were now referred to as 'the CIS' kind of took the sheen off it.That and the fact we were already ootski!
