scott72 25
In todays rag Shilton claims Souness asked him to sign for Rangers. He turned us down fearing playing in Scotland would end his England caps. Was this public knowledge back in '86?Personally im glad he didnt. We signed Chris Woods.Although Shilts played in Euro '88 and Italia '90 and went on to be the most capped English player ever !Sure the 'Hand of God' still gives him sleepless nights! 1NachoNovo 840
Can't remember any links with him and us. I wouldn't have complained if we did sign him, but Woods was just fuckin awesome for us. So, it worked out well in the end.

Terry Hurlock Loyal 12,134
Was a superb keeper, but I think Woods was the best option to go for at the time. Halcyon days back then.
Turnberry18 3,204
Was looking through archives of the Souness time a few months ago and saw Rangers had wanted him. Would like to have seen that. I liked Chris Woods, but his experience could have been something special.
gmcf 35,487
There were rumours at the time - that's all. Then again there were loads of names at that time linked to us. Some were stronger than others ie remember Souness saying he was confident of landing Stuart Pearce at Forest. Others like Shilton weren't as concrete. Right_To_Censor 1,951
Put it this way, had we got him instead of woods we might not have bought goram from hibs
Malvern 11,329
Back then Shilton would have been a major publicity signing, player wise Woods was starting to come into his own and the far better choice.Dodged a bullet imo.
JamieD 20,071
He was 37 and hadn't played in Europe for about 5 years. Think we made the right decision in going for Woods.
