FOCUS and Alleged Banned Songs - The Louden Tavern: Ibrox Stadium

Recommended Posts

Just off the phone to FOCUS to ask them to clarify about 'Fathers Advice' and 'We're Coming Down The Road' (Carson's Army).

Basically their position is the songs in of themselves are not deemed illegal. However, it is how 'UVF' and 'YCV' that are in the songs are perceived - not their true usage that seems to be important.

We therefore, will strive to ensure that everyone within our premises understands the true meaning and background of these songs and the organisations mentioned within them.

Next year is the 100th anniversary of the start of The Great War. These songs are there to commemorate those who fought and died for our freedom in that conflict. We should not and cannot be allowed to forget the sacrifices that were made for our country.

I feel this is a line in the sand. We do not play songs that are deemed illegal under law. These songs do not fall under this category and until that changes we will continue to play them.

I will repeat what we often say: We do not do anything that would bring the name of Rangers into disrepute.

Pressure should be brought to bear on the Republican lovers at all levels.

If we had a board we could call for a motion to protest to Salmonds mob. They won't like it but they would have to deal with it.

Makes some banners about it. Christ knows we make banners at the drop of a hat these days.

Bombard their phone-ins and the media with references to it.

Play them at their own game.

Maybe if we ever have an agm we could include it as an agenda item. ;)

Scotland must be the only country in the world with "Song Police"

Just a quick question then mate. Did they actually agree that as long as people who sing the songs are doing so to "commemorate those who fought and died for our freedom in that conflict" that they could not and would not prosecute ?

And if so, and i appreciate you have already done well just by picking up the phone, do you think they would, for your own protection, confirm this in writing to you. ?

Would be very very handy. (tu)

I would be inclined to email them to confirm your conversation with them in case they subsequently deny it

What they told me was that the songs themselves aren't illegal - it is 'the perception' of the songs that is the issue i.e. being the proscribed organisation 'UVF' rather than the British Army Company 'UVF'. Therefore we will inform everyone within our pub (via announcements on the mic, adverts on TVs, posters etc) the true meaning of the songs - to commemorate the people that fought for this country in WW1.

I can't really speak to whether you could sing it in the street or at the game, the person speaking to me was only referencing the pub. I personally believe that if it went to court and you could prove that you understand the true meaning then you would be on solid ground.

Hope that helps

Safety in writing is the way forward with all this nonsense going on just now. (tu)

I'm pretty sure when a few guys from here spoke on the phone with focus regarding something else they wouldn't give it in writing. I'm not 100% sure. Though jcdbigbear will be able to answer that, hopefully he sees this thread.
