The unacceptable face of Scotland

Scotland's claim to be fighting the cancer of sectarianism and hatred took a severe dent at the weekend. Perhaps sadly, the decision not to hold a one minute silence prior to the Ross County vs Celtic match, came as no surprise to many of us.

Its embarrassing, unedifying and sickening to hear a one minute silence being disrupted and dishonoured. But there is something worse, far worse in fact - not holding such a ceremony at all. Because in failing to do so we have acquiesced to the morons, the bigots - we have handed them victory on a plate.

Let the moronic and shameful actions of bigots within the Celtic support shame all the devils in hell - rather that than our country is forced to fail to remember the fallen whose sacrifice ensured our freedom from evil and tyranny.

This morning I wrote to Ross County asking for an explanation into such an omission on Saturday and in particular who made the decision to dispense with the one minute silence - was it from someone in the club or from outside the club? The Ross County support have previously made their club aware of the importance of Remembrance Day and its significance within their support.

Furthermore this is an issue which must ascend Old Firm rivalry and the often tit for tat churlish and pedantic tribalism. It is time for the Scottish press and media to stop avoiding the issue and to speak out - ignoring it will not make it go away.

It is untenable and unacceptable that men who laid down their lives in order to defeat that which is unacceptable cannot themselves be remembered and honoured due to the actions and behaviour of some in our society which is in itself – wholly unacceptable.

As always d'art you raise a very pertinent point in a purposeful way.....it's a disgrace that clubs are willing to forgo this mark of respect to purely satisfy the prejudices of a group of supporters and one club! However what is worse is the complete media blackout of this added to the inevitable spin and deflection after Amsterdam....

Hopefully you get a reply from Ross county and can share that with us....I'd like to know what Ross county fans think about this!

Fully agree D'Art. It is what we expect from "them" but I am more disappointed with Ross County not having the balls to hold the silence. Presumably their support who want the silence to be held are not important to the board (if it was their decision). Of course it could have been the local plod.

Would I be correct n the assumption that this was the only game in the UK not to hold a minutes silence?

St Johnstone allegedly "forgot" which in its own way is a terrible admission however I can't imagine any other game purposefully skipped this mark of respect which is an absolute disgrace!

They would have booed the minutes silence and still got away with it and nothing said.

My hatred levels are really rising more than ever and as everyone is aware they are cowards who would not speak out of turn within your earshot as they know it's wrong.

Agree completely this should be highlighted. Disgraceful decision by Ross County and although we know wo it came from, it is Ross County who should be disgraced into explaining themselves.

I believe they have 'explained', I don't believe them for a second, but it will be enough for the press to let it go (they weren't going to pick it up anyway)

The following is from Ross County Official Site:

Ross County Football Club would like to sincerely apologise for the lack of a minute's silence at their match on Saturday the 9th of November ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

As a Club we are both honoured and humbled by the sacrifice of the men and women who have given of themselves for the benefit of others in times of war and conflict, particularly throughout the past 99 years and even more so as we approach the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

The lack of a minute's silence was not an operational or policy decision but an error of omission arising from a failure to address changes in staff responsibilities, and the matter is being dealt with internally.

The Club will continue in its policy of marking the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month with a 2 minute silence as well supporting the Poppy Appeal by allocating Matchday Collections at the Stadium to support their work in assisting veterans and will of course ensure measures are taken to avoid any possible repetition of our error on Saturday the 9th.

That is not only insult to the fallen - but also an insult to our intelligence

Aye and the band played believe it if ye like. To little to late and all to appease the offended bheasts who find a banner offensive but not the brutal assault of the police. As D'art stated RC should be ashamed and embarrassed by their actions. If they have nothing honest to say then they should remain silent. Its strange how they were able to apologise in advance to the BL but failed to inform staff. No I shall be lodging a formal complaint and highlighting the above

Whilst individual clubs may say they forgot (yeh, right....) it would be interesting to see who bheasts played on Remembrance weekend last season. Was there a minutes silence? Who did they play season before? Was there a minutes silence? Hope you see my point....a common denominator for 'forgetfulness'?

However, WE remembered them. Lest We Forget.

Also...having myself been a Ref...I will bet that the ref asked how the minutes silence would be observed...and that would have happened well before kick-off. So their excuse is woeful.
