Stoke City has been hit by historic abuse claims by up to eight former apprentice players, the Sunday People can reveal.

They have come forward to allege they suffered a string of humiliating incidents at the hands of senior players during the 1980s.

The eight men are being represented by a Midlands-based law firm.

Last night, Staffordshire Police confirmed they carried out an investigation into such claims in 2008. During the probe five years ago several witnesses were questioned by officers in the wake of allegations.

Police also interviewed four men in connection with alleged abuse.

Once the questioning was over, all four were told by the Crown Prosecution Service there was insufficient evidence and no action would be taken.

But high-profile abuse cases such as the Jimmy Savile scandal, and string of arrests that followed, are believed to have inspired the men to come forward again. Now the former apprentices, who were teenagers at the time of the alleged abuse, have resumed their fight.

Shocking details of alleged abuse have been passed to legal experts.

And the men have given interviews to solicitors who are drawing up plans to take up their cause again. One alleged victim told lawyers he had been assaulted by a first team player in a “bizarre initiation ceremony”.
