Just saw this GIF on a Guardian article about backpasses (http://www.theguardian.com/sport/football-cliches/2014/jan/28/memory-legal-backpasses-jones-souness-dixon?CMP=twt_gu) and they talk about how it was cheered as if it was a goal. Was this fairly common? It seems like it would have absolutely infuriating if you supported the other team!

Passes like that were very rare, but back passes were a legit tactic, and could be very effective in keeping possession to protect a narrow lead.

Frustrating as feck when the opposition did it of course.
