Hopes had been raised Rangers fans might have been able to take control of the club

Fresh hopes have been raised about Gers fans taking control of the Ibrox club in the past week after Hearts supporters successfully rescued the Tynecastle club from administration.

Supporters Direct Scotland is set to hold a meeting with groups interested in fan ownership at the Louden Tavern in Glasgow on Friday, February 14.

But many involved in the three main supporters' organisations - the Assembly, the Association and the Trust - are disappointed at the scheme.

It is being fronted by former board members of the Trust which had been looking into the possibility of setting up a Interest Company (CIC).

They resigned from the Trust en masse and now appear to be looking to set up a CIC themselves.

The CIC would allow greater sums of money to be raised by fans than is currently the case - and therefore a greater number of shares to be purchased.

SDS chief Paul Goodwin has previously estimated that 25,000 Rangers fans paying £20 a month would be enough to gain control of the Ibrox club.

It is believed that fans could be asked to part with £18.72 a month - Rangers was founded back in 1872 - in order to achieve this goal.

However, doubts have been expressed about whether there would be any shares to buy in Rangers - even if larger sums of money could be raised.

There are also fears it could have a negative impact on an existing scheme being operated by the Trust, Buy Rangers.

One supporter, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "Hearts are available to buy at this moment in time.

"Rangers, on the other hand, aren't available to buy. Unless, that is, the group driving this know more than the rest of us know.

"Maybe some institutional investors will indeed look to cut their losses in the future. But even then there is no guarantee that fans would be able to buy shares."

The potential formation of a new fans' group has also not gone down well among many representatives of the Assembly, the Association and the Trust.

The supporter said: "The last thing we need is an additional group on the scene. I don't think it is what fans want to see.

"My concern would be that it would create division and undo a lot of hard work.

"In the past year we have presented a united front. We have all come together under one umbrella.

"The last thing that we need now is another organisation."

"One supporter, who wished to remain anonymous"

I wonder Who?? lol

Shall we call them Andy or Andrew or Drew just to make it easier? I couldn't imagine the 'anonymous' one had a vested interest in more than one of the unrepresentative organisations or could they?

"Rangers, on the other hand, aren't available to buy." - Ah...so Buy Rangers shouldnt be promoting and touting for new business either then ??

One supporter, who wished to remain anonymous, and has been living on a deserted island for the last 12 months said: "My concern would be that it would create division and undo a lot of hard work. In the past year we have presented a united front."

absolute sack of shite. They can't find anything to write about us at the moment so they start to drum up the idea of fan ownership as a possibility rather than what it is - a pipe dream. Check the nick eh the fuckin journo, got a coupon like he's squeezing one out. He can GTF.

Rangers supporters' chief wary of fan-led takeover at Ibrox

DREW Robertson responded to SDS chief Paul Goodwin who revealed in Record Sport last week how Rangers fans could assume control of their club within 18 months.

RANGERS supporters groups have urged a note of caution ahead of a Valentine’s Day showdown aimed at a possible fan takeover at Ibrox.

A meeting has been arranged in Glasgow next Friday – exactly two years to the day since Rangers went into administration.

Supporters Direct Scotland will offer advice on setting up a fan ownership scheme similar to the one being used to rescue Hearts.

SDS chief Paul Goodwin revealed in Record Sport last week how Rangers fans could assume control of their club within 18 months.

Goodwin believes almost £5million could be raised in a year if 20,000 supporters contributed £20-a-month.

However, fans’ spokesman Drew Roberton feels there is little comparison between the Rangers and Hearts situations and insists big obstacles would have to be overcome.

He said: “The idea is admirable given what has gone on at the club and is worth considering but to use Hearts and Dunfermline as examples is misleading.

“They were both in administration when fan takeovers were launched. As it stands Rangers aren’t up for grabs and are not for sale.

“The fans would either have to raise funny money to buy out the current owners or, if they went into administration again, be afforded preferred bidder status. There’s no guarantees in either instance.

“There has also not been any dialogue between SDS and a number of the Rangers fan groups despite suggestions to the contrary.”

But SDS remain optimistic on community ownership of Rangers and will outline their proposals on February 14 in the Louden Tavern.

Point 1. At least we have a journalist acknowledging we were formed in 1872.

Point 2. Agree totally with Clyde Valley and (oh no!) bawsburst.

Point 3. Surprised, not, to see that rea is still putting links to blogs. What a saddo!

Point 4. In another thread I was slated for suggesting that this issue was divisive. I think the comments on this thread vindicates my stance on that score.
