Ally McCoist watches Rangers coast into Scottish Cup quarter finals and says: We're a match for anyone left in competition

McCOIST was delighted with his players after the beat Dunfermline 4-0 at Ibrox last night and said on that performance his team have to be taken seriously.

ALLY McCOIST believes if Rangers replicate their display against Dunfermline in the last eight of the Scottish Cup they can compete with any side left in the competition.

The Ibrox gaffer was delighted as his side hammered the Fifers 4-0 last night to book a place in Sunday’s quarter-final draw.

A Dean Shiels hat-trick and a David Templeton strike saw off the Pars and leaves McCoist’s men one game from an Ibrox semi-final.

And with the likes of Celtic, Aberdeen, Dundee United and Hibs potential opponents in the next round - McCoist says the League One side can mix it with Premiership clubs if they give a repeat of last night’s polished display.

He said: “We’ll need to replicate that in the next round because we were really good. I wouldn’t say we proved a point to anyone, we just thoroughly deserved the victory.

“I’ll take a home tie in the quarter-finals - but I have no preference who we play.

“Can we beat anyone left in the competition? I really can’t answer that - but I’d be happy with that standard of performance against any Premiership team or otherwise.

“Celtic are the favourites and there are good teams left but if we play like that I’d take my chances against most sides.

“I don’t think anyone will fear us. Most managers won’t want Celtic but I think we now have a team who are a competent top-flight side.

“It was a great 90 minutes for us, we were solid for the whole match. There were some terrific individual performances but I’m delighted with the team’s display.”

McCoist praised goalscorers Shiels and Templeton and was pleased to seal such a comfortable passage into the last eight.

He said: “Dean is certainly chipping in with some important goals. He’s getting closer to the form that got him here.

“Dean and Templeton didn’t have a full pre-season because of injury and they’ve struggled at times but there’s no doubt that, when available, they’re more than capable of performances like that.

“It’s great to be in the quarter-finals. It’s a boost for everyone because it’s the showpiece tournament in Scotland.

“We want to ensure the fans look forward to the draw on Sunday and we’ve done that.”

Pars gaffer Jim Jefferies had no complaints with the result and lamented the loss of early goals in either half against the League One leaders.

He said: “The last time we were here, it was 70 minutes before we lost a goal. Up until then we gave Rangers very little.

“Tonight we lost two goals in the first 20 and it could have been more.

“We lost another one right after half-time and we were lucky it wasn’t more. We couldn’t cope with them.

“On paper, if you look at the two teams it’s men against boys but it was the same on the park.

“Rangers deserved to win by that margin. They complained about us being over-physical in the last two games but we never laid a finger on them here. We should have given them more of it.”

Rangers were forced to release a statement last night denying claims that the club was on the brink of a second administration.

McCoist backed Graham Wallace’s sentiments and said: “I don’t read blogs or social network sites but I’ve been reassured by the chief executive that there is a lot of nonsense written. My understanding is that it’s all completely untrue.”
