NETHERLANDS: AC MILAN AND

AJAX IN SIX-A-SIDE SOCCER

Story

- INTRO: AC Milan and Ajax Amsterdam were in

a convincing lead after the first day of an

international six-a-side tournament, while

Britain's Liverpool languished with no wins and

no points.

The two-day tournament, developed by former

Barcelona coach Johan Cruyff, pitted AC Milan,

Ajax, Glasgow Rangers and Liverpool against

each other over a series of matches divided into

four eight-minute quarters.

Over 21,000 spectators were in the Amsterdam

Arena on Monday (January 27) to see the

contest.

In the first of the matches, Ajax outclassed

Rangers to win 6-2.

Patrick Kluivert and Kiki Musampa both scored

twice in Ajax's victory with Finnish international

Jari Litmanen and Marc Overmars adding the

other two goals, while Jorg Albertz and Gordon

Durie responded for the Scottish Champions.

England midfielder Paul Gascoigne hurt his ankle

during the match, apparently when he collided

with Ajax goalkeeper Fred Grim.

It was not immediately clear how serious the

injury was but it came just two weeks ahead of a

World Cup qualifier against Italy.

Reports said Gascoigne left Amsterdam on

crutches, but that may have been a

precautionary measure until he received X-ray

examination.

Liverpool were then trounced 5-0 by AC Milan,

with a brilliant Edgar Davids goal the highlight of

a one-sided fixture.

Ajax and AC Milan then drew 2-2, while Rangers

added to Liverpool's misery by beating them 7-3.

The remaining two games of the first round-robin

stage, plus final and third-place play-off take

place on Tuesday.
