McCoist: Part-time fans don’t deserve tickets

ALLY MCCOIST insists Rangers deserve a bigger share of Scottish Cup semi-final tickets because their fans don’t just turn up for the big games.

Dundee United’s anger at being made to play at “neutral” Ibrox has been exacerbated by the fact they are getting 13,000 tickets compared to the Light Blues’ initial 25,000 allocation, although more could yet be released for both clubs.

United manager Jackie McNamara has demanded an equal share but counterpart McCoist feels that would be harsh on the tens of thousands of Rangers fans who have attended games all season.

The Ibrox boss also pointed out that a 25,000 split for each team would be well above the average gate at Tannadice.

McCoist said: “I don’t have a problem with Dundee United or Jackie’s team getting half the tickets.

“But it is strange that the last semi-final they played was at Hampden and the entire crowd was only 24,000 when they were playing Celtic.

“There is an argument that our fans don’t just turn out for big semi-finals – they turn out every week. We have a big and loyal support. Against Dunfermline last week we had more than 44,000 fans and they turn up for every home game.”

United had sounded out the SFA about getting the semi-final switched to Celtic Park before Rangers won their replay with Albion Rovers.

That request was turned down and McNamara now believes the League One winners have a real advantage.

However, McCoist played that claim down. The Gers boss added: “I think Jackie said on television that we would have an advantage but, being honest with you, there is very little to be made with home advantage in the modern game the higher you go up the ranks in football.

“I won’t kid you that I am not happy the game is at Ibrox.”

Rangers will be out for revenge on April 12 after Dundee United knocked them out of the Scottish Cup at Tannadice last season in McNamara’s first game in charge.

Meanwhile, McCoist is also pleased that his club appear to have taken a step closer to sorting out their off-the-field problems.

Former director Dave King has held positive talks with the board and now wants them to be given time to carry out a full review of the club.

The South Africa-based businessman had previously called on fans not to buy season tickets and instead put money into his supporter-led buyout.

McCoist said: “I am pleased there is an agreement. I think both parties see their talks as positive and that can only be a good thing.”

They should take the 13,000 and be happy. If we split it 50/50 then about a 1/4 of the stadium would be empty because Dundee didn't bring enough fans. That's unless C***** "fans" want to come along and pretend to be Dundee fans for the day like they did for Albion Rovers.

I agree with what Ally says that part time fans shouldn't do full time fans out of tickets but I hate all this bullshit that we pack out Ibrox all the time, we dont, we're lucky to get 30k most weeks

for some reason since our demotion attendances have been the new topic of the day the SPL and 3rd division was so boring last year that attendance wars became the only interesting thing, this year in the Premiership that mob are announcing tickets sold and we're following suit, its all very well lying to ourselves and each other but what happens come season ticket renewel time? Not just for Rangers but for any club that just announces tickets sold

whats the hook to keep those fans renewing when they cant be arsed going with the season card they've already purchased.

We didn't have 44k at the Dunfermline game and it wasn't close to 43k for the Airdrie game either.

That being said what we did have in the 3rd tier of Scottish football is still about 6 times what Utd get in the top tier of Scottish Football
