The Hoops chief executive was the subject of chants and furious individual verbal attacks from fans as Legia Warsaw humiliated his men.

After a thumping 4-1 win in Warsaw a week earlier, Henning Berg’s Poles claimed a thoroughly deserved 2-0 win at Murrayfield to clinch an emphatic 6-1 winning aggregate score.

The embarrassing end to Celtic’s Champions League campaign at the third round qualifying stage means the Hoops drop into a dogfight with the continent’s second string clubs to try and reach the Europa League group stages.

As Celtic flopped, punters tried in vain to get their feelings about a lack of investment and the quality of football on show over to the Celtic board.

Security men moved in to protect Lawwell and the rest of the Hoops hierarchy in the main stand.

The supporters’ fury boiled over after Michal Zyro and Michal Kucharczyk struck either side of the break to put the tie beyond Ronny Deila’s struggling side.

Norwegian Deila now faces a huge battle to gain credibility in the eyes of the Celtic faithful already split on the decision to hand him the job when Neil Lennon quit in the summer.

But his task will be made harder with the imminent sales of Fraser Forster and Virgil van Dijk.

Newcastle United are the latest club to express an interest in Van Dijk after Swansea, Sunderland and Hamburg showed their hand, while Southampton remain keen to snap up Forster – who threw his jersey to fans at full-time last night.

Last night one online betting firm made Deila 4/1 favourite to be the first manager sacked this season.

McBookie.com spokesman Paul Petrie said: “It’s still very early days but a Champions League exit is a nightmare for the club. The fact the manner of the defeat was so bad doesn’t help his cause. He will need to start well in the league or the fans could get on his back.”
