I was impressed with porto this year in the champions league and when you take into consideration that most of the players in there first team came through there youth set up that just makes it even more impressive but I was thinking how much money would it cost for us to have a similar system set up of course not on the exact same level that would take years and a shit ton of money to be on par with but just a thought guys

The problem we will always have is that we are a Scottish club so naturally our young players will suffer from the Scottish mentallity towards training and developing. Its a mentallity that see's players eating teacakes at half time and kids who don't pass the ball being rewarded.

The mentality has to be changed, but IMO this can only be achieved through a massive investment in education and no-one will want to pay for that.

Your right, it has to start at school level. When the young lads are playing at that level they pick up awful habits being coached by the school janitor.

Whatever model Iceland uses is starting to bear fruit for them. Johan knows about this as I think the Faroes may have introduced it too.

Yeah but a scouting network in Scandinavian country's like Denmark and Sweden definitely something that's worth looking into

These countries also have it much easier than us when it comes to signing non-eu players. It's wishful thinking from us wanting to adopt the scouting systems of foreign teams when the UK is probably one of the hardest if not THE hardest place to sign non-eu players unless they're already top class international players.

In certain schools we have a "football class" as well as "music classes". This means that all the kids in these classes are carefully selected.. In the football class they will start the day with a workout and then back to your studies... then you do a couple of hours of football training then back to class. You learn about nutrition and everything that goes with being an athlete. This is still in the early stages and is yet to bear any real fruit, but things are looking positive. Our u16 national team just beat Iceland... that tells you something. Also, like in Iceland, we are trying to have the most qualified and experienced coaches coaching the YOUNGEST. This is how Iceland is so successful..

Denmark sends a lot of youts to Holland, etc. We need to find these players before they do!! Look at Eriksen, for instance. Iceland also sends a lot of players to Holland/Germany. These players would cost next to nothing.

Cheers for the insight Johan! (tu)

I think they have over 100 scouts though in fairness to them, we don't even have one :anguish:

Sporting have around 150 scouts. Porto have closer to 300. Hearts have approximately 10 scouts that scout for youth exclusively around Edinburgh.

Clubs like Man City, as well as many other clubs including Porto and Sporting, have access to a highly sophisticated online scouting system consisting of detailed reports on countless players written by close to a thousand scouts throughout the planet.

We have a vhs of last weeks match.

Porto have a massive operation, they have links to four or five teams in the top two divisions in Portugal and send players on loan to them. They let teams from places like North Africa use their training ground and iirc send or sent a team to compete in the youth copa libertoris (sp!).

As said they get access to non EU far easier than Rangers would and if we are honest it would take 20 years to replicate their system here!! They are probably the benchmark for big teams outwith a big league.

Also its an easy route for any player from outside the EU to get a passport.
