CAYENNE (AFP) - Glasgow Rangers striker Jean-Claude Darcheville was arrested by Brazilian customs officers two weeks ago with a bag containing 46,200 euros in cash, according to reports here Thursday.

O Liberal newspaper claimed the Frenchman, travelling from his native city of Cayenne in French Guyana, was stopped by customs at Belem airport in Brazil on June 12.

According to the report Darcheville was forced to hand over 43,200 euros to the authorities. Brazilian law rules that all sums over 3000 euros and being carried in transit must be declared to the authorities.

Darcheville, who recently signed for Rangers from French side Bordeaux, told AFP Thursday there was no truth in the report.

"Nothing happened. People can believe what they want to, but my family know it's not true," he said.

"Whatever the newspaper reports is its problem."

Tax official Sergio Candido, an inspector with the federal customs authorities in Belem, told the paper that Darcheville "did not declare the momey he was carrying".

He confirmed that the excess - 43,200 euros - was confiscated by the authorities.

O Liberal cited officials as saying that Darcheville had claimed he was not aware of the laws on carrying money.

However officials played down the Frenchman's excuse, owing to the "number of notice boards all over the airport in Belem warning travellers of the rules on declaring sums of money". The signs are in French, English, Portuguese and Spanish."

The 31-year-old Darcheville joined Rangers on a two-year deal in May. He recently played for Rennes, Lorient, and Nottingham Forest in 1998-99.
