***Manager/DOF rumours thread***

Board are gambling that Caixinha shows enough from now to the end of the season to get everyone to renew season books.

Could turn out to be a disaster or could turn out to be great appointment.

Let's wait and see before moaning about it, any appointment is a gamble even FDB would have been.

According to The Times today Pedro's current club only appointed him 14 months ago and are expected to offer him a new contract.  Seemingly under his current contract the compensation fee if he resigns is 'only' £75k but if he just sees his contract out for the remaining 3 or 4 months of its term, and assuming he still wants to come to Rangers, then clearly there would be no compensation fee to be paid.    We'd presumably then stick with the caretaker until Summer.

The newspaper claims there is no chance Pedro would be manager in time for the OF game on 12 March.  Apparently leaving Qatar can take 3 weeks as visas and some bank accounts must be cancelled and an exit permit secured.

If his current club offer a new deal then part of it could be a large signing-on fee which might dampen his enthusiasm for coming to Rangers, which would involve taking a big pay cut.

So.....is he really a contender for manager, or is this just a stalking horse ploy either by Rangers itself to deflect attention from the real target, or by Pedro as a means of boosting how much he earns from his current club by threatening to hike it to Rangers only to be tempted by a big pay rise?

Besides which he doesn't seem to have a track record of staying with clubs longer term.  He looks to be a short-fuse specialist.   If he - as Warburton was doing - is using this as a stepping stone to getting an EPL management job the question surely for the Board would be just how long do they realistically expect him to stay before we are bounced into yet another manager hunt.

If he is really the right and best option that the Board have in front of them, and the best by some distance then it still feels right now to be a bit risky.   I wonder who'd be next in line if Pedro decides to stick with the big bucks in the sand rather than the blue blue sea of Ibrox?

Did he not win 3 titles in Mexico?

A title where his team finished 8th in the league then won it on a top half play-off split (I got told yesterday the leagues hard and it was still good going but I don't care, that's not a real league win - you don't finish 8th and win a league)

and 2 domestic cups.

Found this one from 2011. He's good mates with Mourinho, no doubt we'll be getting every Man Utd youth player on loan then..

HE walked through the door of the SFA offering a letter of introduction from Jose Mourinho - now Pedro Caixinha wants to follow the Special One's path to the top.

Portugal's newest managerial sensation is already on the first rung of the ladder, bossing unfashionable Uniao de Leiria into the top four of the Liga Sagres. And he insists Scotland is where Mourinho has told him the climb needs to start.

Caixinha was in Glasgow last week, setting out on the first module of his UEFA Pro Licence alongside the likes of Davie Weir, Alan Stubbs, David Unsworth and Graham Alexander. He then drove south for a gold-dust Q&A with Sir Alex Ferguson.

That's the kind of knowledge he came here to acquire - and why the comparison with the Real Madrid manager, who started his rise as a boss at exactly the same club nine years ago, is an easy one to make.

Caixinha said: "I'm not the first Portuguese coach to come here. Andre Villas Boas did the course too - and look at how he is doing with Porto now. However, it's because of Mourinho that I'm here.

"He was the one who advised me to come, he was the guy who wrote a recommendation letter to get me on the course.

"Leiria was his first big job in Portugal before he went to Porto, Chelsea, Inter and then Real Madrid. It would be nice to follow him all the way up the ladder.

"He has set the standard - and not just for us Portuguese managers. He's one of the best of all time. People back home have asked: 'Why Scotland?' but the reason is simple. "I want to learn. I want to know more and more about the game.

"I came here to do my A Licence and learned so much. I liked the way the people received me and I saw football differently.

"Especially in the way the Scottish coaches prepared the training sessions.

"I know it's seen as being different, especially on the management side, but that's why I wanted to come.

"I got the chance to ask questions to Sir Alex Ferguson - when else would I get the opportunity to do that?

"We get the chance to meet and share knowledge with top-level coaches - that's why we're all here."

The likeness to Mourinho doesn't begin and end with the link to Leiria, although there's a twinkle in Caixinha's eye at the thought of taking his side further up the league than their best-ever fifth place under Jose in 2002.

Riding high, the minnows are chasing a European spot for only the third time in their history.

Beyond that, though, the rise to the top of Mourinho and Caixinha has followed a remarkably similar path. Neither a top player but both men of the world as assistants long before they got their break in management.

And the well-travelled Leiria gaffer insists their background as football scholars rather than players is proving to be a trend well worth following.

Caixinha revealed: "I met Jose through friends, mainly through my previous manager Jose Peseiro because they studied together at university. Mourinho was at Porto when I worked under Peseiro at Sporting Lisbon.

"I started with Sporting as assistant to Peseiro back in 2004.

"After there we went to Saudi Arabia with Al Hilal, then to Greece with Panathinaikos and Romania with Rapid Bucharest.

"We went back to Saudi Arabia to take charge of their national team but after that I quit and came to Leiria.

"It's my first job in management and I'm pleased with how we're doing. We have a fantastic squad and it has been an amazing experience so far.

"But I can do it because I've seen the world and experienced different football cultures.

"I only played until I was 23. After that I went to university, graduated in sports sciences and did my masters in football.

"Then I started my PhD in football but I haven't managed to finish yet.

"I'm a coaches coach, not a player who has come through. In Portugal we call ourselves academic coaches.

"The experience I have around the world works. Mourinho did exactly the same as me. Not a top player but a guy who went to university and became a top coach. There must be something right about this way, no?"

Great.. more Phil bardsleys or Lee martins

Agreed.

Everybody wants a manager who shows some passion and it sounds great now saying that he'll argue and fight with every cunt but managing Rangers means you are never far from a powder keg situation and sometimes you have to have some composure and know when to pick and choose your battles.

I said it last night but this honestly feels like people are latching onto anything that they can to try and dress this up as a good appointment.

If it's really all about STs then you'd have seen a big name in, yes they want STs and while his name isn't enough to do it on its own he has a few months to show the brand of football he wants to play and if he gets second I'd suggest that may be enough to maintain ST levels.

Yup. It's fucking painful to read.

When his name was first announced in regards to speculation people were like who/no chance/fuck that/we need better ... then it looks to be happening and it's Mexico's a tough league, semi finals of the cup is great going, he'll take no shit, good contacts etc etc.

It's desperate.

I understand it. It's rationalising to make yourself feel better but it's better to be honest with yourself and just admit the board are taking us for fucking mugs again if they appoint this guy.

Like I said, good luck to them trying to sell season tickets especially if he doesn't hit the ground running.

From what I read one of those domestic cups is basically the Mexican version of the community shield.

How is his record honking? took two poor clubs in Portugal to 10th & 7th first one he left over unpaid wages the other he left after poor start of the 2nd season.

Won the league in Mexico with a team that wasn't expected to aswell as got to their Champions League final.

His 2nd season at Nacional is worry aye but no manager we are going to get won't have some sort of blip on their record. Rodgers made a mess of his time at Reading, still ended up getting Liverpool job.

Agree mate, 85% will renew regardless and "big name" doesn't guarantee success just look at PLG.

If it is him then got to give him a chance, one thing for sure can't be much worse than we already are.

and that makes him a good appointment? Jesus christ.

We don't need a manager who won't be worse - we need someone who will make us compete and be considerably better than anything we've had since Walter left.
