Rangers target Pedro Caixinha takes charge of RESERVES in desert as compensation wrangle stalls Ibrox deal
Caixinha had originally hoped to arrive in Scotland no later than yesterday, but whether or not he makes it for the Celtic clash remains up in the air.

Pedro Caixinha will be stuck in the desert taking charge of Al-Gharafa’s second-string today instead of flying to Glasgow to prepare for Sunday’s Old Firm showdown.

Record Sport revealed yesterday that the 46-year-old had put his travel plans on hold for at least 24 hours after the bid to appoint him as the 16th manager in Rangers’ history stalled unexpectedly.

It’s understood the delay centres around the size of the compensation package which would be due to the Qatari club and also to Caixhina who is prepared to rip up the remainder of his £2million-a-year contract in order to get to Glasgow as quickly as possible.

Caixhina had originally hoped to arrive in Scotland no later than yesterday to give him enough time to get his ideas across to the players at the club’s Auchenhowie HQ before leading them across the city to take on Celtic in Sunday’s lunchtime derby.

But he was still holed up on the Persian Gulf last night having agreed to take charge of today’s Al-Gharafa’s reserves for a game against league rivals Umm Salal.

After that, Caixinha’s next move will depend entirely upon whether or not Rangers can finalise a package to get him to Glasgow in time for the weekend.

Sources in Qatar believe Al-Gharafa’s top brass have already begun searching for a replacement in the belief that Caixinha is unlikely to return to the club.

Record Sport understands Caixhina has a long standing booking in place to fly to Lisbon tomorrow where he was scheduled to spend a week long family break - on flights which it’s believed were reserved weeks before Rangers made their initial move to make him Mark Warburton’s replacement.

But our source said: “After the second team game on Wednesday the season in Qatar stops for a month.

"Pedro had already booked flights to return to Portugal for a holiday but this arrangement was made several weeks ago.

“But the talks about moving to Rangers have been continuing over the past few days and the situation is becoming clearer. It’s still possible he will be in Glasgow before the weekend but we’ll have to wait and see.”

Rangers had hoped to have a director of football in place over the weekend but top target Ross Wilson remains in his post as head of recruitment at Southampton having turned the Ibrox club down last night.

The Rangers board also held talks with Paul Mitchell of Spurs who has now been released from working down his notice period at White Hart Lane.

Mitchell - who was also formerly at Southampton -.has been credited with unearthing a number of stars including Sadio Mane, Dusan Tadic and Dele Alli could provide Rangers with a ready made alternative to Wilson but sources close to the star-finder believe he too sees his future in the English top flight.

This contradicts every other media source that's saying compensation isn't an issue from the Qatar side

Yes, but unless he shut his eyes I'd imagine he saw more than 400 there.

Aye but he was clearly talking about his time as a manager - not an assistant.

Ally McCoist was a successful assistant in front of big crowds. Just saying.

So no money to pay compo. This board really are skint. He should have interviewed us. Question 1: how much available to spend. Answer: player by player basis but no more than 500k a player lol

Where does it say we've no money for compensation? Do we now take everything the Daily Rhebel says as gospel now?

I don't have much faith in the board as much as the next person but sometimes I feel we jump on everything. I'm sure they would have £300k (if the gutter press are to be believed) to pay for Pedro!

Can't see a club with that kind of money worrying about a paltry £300k

Also why has he been training the Al-Gharafa’s reserves, whilst the Al-Gharafa club look for a new manager? Don't the clubs hold on to the passports of there employees over there? Did he plan to jump ship whilst taking a holiday to Portugal? I think Boydy was right something doesn't seem right with this.

Anyone that thinks Paul Mitchell is coming to work for us if off their tits. His standing in the game within his role is second to none. After successfully working with a team that is currently second place in the EPL, why the fuck would he join us where his pond is to fish for 500k-1.5million signings. Spurs could spend 40m on a player and if the bloke turned out to be a dud, it would just be a bad day at the office.

On 1 page we can afford the million quid compensation for Mcinnes then you go onto the next page and we cant afford the 300 grand for Caixinha.

Love this place.

Aye the place is mental but to add to the nuttiness of it, the 1 million quid figure from McInnes was just one person guessing plucked from thin air.

Aberdeen might chance their arm but there's no way it would cost that to get McInnes let's be honest.

I read somewhere they'd want 900 grand for him, no idea if that's true though.

He's left Tottenham and already had an interview with us it's not ridiculous to think he might be coming here.
