Wallace and Tavernier - Underrated?

I was just having a look at the assist tables and noticed that during last seasons league campaign our full-backs done quite well.  Lee Wallace created 5 goals, and Tavernier also created 5 goals:

Lee Wallace also scored 3 goals, while Tavernier only scored 1.  Rangers scored a total of 56 league goals last season and our full-backs were directly involved in 14 of them.  To put that in to perspective, our full-backs were involved in 1 out of every 4 league goals.  From an attacking perspective, that's a massive contribution.

It's also worth pointing out that in Europe the other night we hit the bar twice from headers.  Wallace crossing the ball in to Niko, and Tavernier crossing the ball in to Windass.  Our attacking midfielders sadly failed to score but the important point is that chances were once again being created by the full-backs.

I know most on here will heavily criticise these players for defensive frailty but isn't that as much to do with the weakness of our CBs and CDMs last year?  With a strong pair of CBs, and more impressive CDMs coming in this year, I'm expecting to see a lot more from our two attacking full-backs.  These two are more than capable performers in the SPFL and massively underrated by our support.

If anything Wallace is possibly the luckiest man in that squad. His loyalty to the club, and the distraction of Kiernan and Tavernier on the right side of defence the last two years have allowed him to et away with murder. He gets absolutely rinsed on a weekly basis, and i've never seen someone lose pace to the extent he has in the last 5 years.

I would tentatively agree for the moment here, as we have not had a solid enough midfield in years. Rossiter and Dorrans could, and I say strongly, could, make a difference to how we use our wingbacks better. Wallace is not and has never been a good defender, neither has Tav. But what they do well, is pushing the opposition back. Attacking wing backs is not a new thing in the game, but those two might, just might, get a bit more protection from better sitting midfielders.

I hope........

They're both major weaknesses in the team whenever they play. Both like to get forward and rarely contribute anything but massively offset by their unwillingness to get back and defend or inability to stop crosses coming in to the box. We need to sign better players for their positions.

neither can defend and their crossings is abysmal, Tavs cross completion last year was 25% one of the worst in the league for his position. We need better fullbacks to have any chance of winning the league.

Wallace should never have been brought to Rangers, better players around him made him look better than he was, but that could be said about a lot of players, possibly the last five years in lower leagues have burned him out, opposed to playing along side good players who could carry him.

He has to be thanked for staying when the rats deserted the sinking ship.

I don't think either are as bad as people say they are but Wallace is no longer good enough for us to challenge Celtic and Tav is a decent player just too inconsistent.

Wallace has two things going against him. Number 1 is he started out early with Hearts and was a first team regular since he was 17 - he's no longer got the pace he used to and he just looks tired all the time. Injuries and time have caught up with him. Number 2 is he screwed his career by staying with us. Four years of playing in lower divisions has turned him from being one of the top two left backs in Scotland to an average mid-table left back. He is also captain by default - when he is not captain material.

Tav on the other hand is a decent right back but struggles from the fans perceptions that his first job is to defend. Which he struggles with positionally. However in the modern game a lot of the good full backs are quite poor defenders. The most frustrating thing about him is when he wants to he can land a ball on a 10p piece but he lacks concentration when delivering a ball and passing. There's enough potential ability there for him to push on and be the best right back in Scotland.

They're both shite with Tav being slightly less shite then Wallace, the way we play and allowing the fullbacks to bomb forward they should have double the amount of assists, the amount of times they get it into good positions and cut it back to no cunt(Wallace especially) is a joke although it's entirely their fault as we've hardly ever got anycunt in the box

So did Liam Polworth from Inverness who finished in the bottom half.

Christ even Windass got 5 and they were all accidental.

Couldn't agree more. Said it many times. As far as the loyalty thing id concerned, we don't teally know if he had any concrete offers to go elsewhere. Unfortunately, he won't be getting any now.
