Full backs

Read on twitter, a Cardiff fan saying that after we signed John, that we now had 4 full backs all decent going forward but useless at the back.

I was raging.

Can't believe he thinks Lee hodson is decent going forward.

In all seriousness I think this is an issue that needs addressed. We needed a manager to come in and sort us out. Make us difficult to beat then add quality to the team.

A new manager, not murty should have been appointed to assess the team and to start making moved for next season.

Most fullbacks these days are stronger going forward than defending. The game has changed and managers/coaches see them as being more important in the opposition half than their own. They are also now encouraged to attack in tandem whereas in the past onee invariably held back in order that they could tuck in and cover if a move broke down.

James Tavernier: 3 goals and 5 assists.

Declan John: 3 goals and 2 assists.

Lee Wallace: 1 assists.

Our full-backs have contributed to over a third of our league goals.  They're an asset to us.

How many goals against have they played their part in?

We have had too many goals lost from wide areas, defenders should defend first, attack second.

It's our inability to boss the midfield or get a proper CB pairing that's costing us goals.  We're too powder puff through the middle and that's been the case since we got promoted back in to the top-tier.  We can't have youth academy players and midgets like Jason Holt running around in there anymore because we're getting bossed.  We should be dominating possession against most teams in this league.  If we're dominating possession the full-backs ability to go forward will be more of an asset than their ability to defend.  A few years ago Izaguirre tore apart this league despite the fact he couldn't defend because his team were always on the front foot.  Whittaker was worse than Tavernier and we won trebles with guys like him at RB.

Right down the centre of the team is weak. We need a strong centre forward so Morelos can take advantage, we need at least one strong and skilful midfielder that can comand the centre of the pitch and two centre backs to own the defence. McCrorie is good but he is young and still learning his trade but he is one for the future.

And how many goals have we conceded due to their inability to defend?

Your right about whittaker although at least he could put a fucking tackle in something Tavernier seems incapable of doing. Your heart is literally in your mouth every time a wide man runs at him because inevitably he's going to breeze past him. It's a bit unfair to single him out especially as the rest are equally inept. He just seems to embody all that's wrong with our defence.

Hodson looks genuinely scared of the football, up there with Bates.

Tav has regressed completely since Hibs, like it’s unbelievable how bad he’s become literally overnight.

John is much more suited pushed forward clearly.

So we basically have no fullbacks.

I said the same thing a few weeks ago.  A spine of big physical players who can put themselves about is desperately needed.  We're being outfought and pushed about by other teams and it needs addressed.

The fullbacks are (relatively to our level) talented footballers. If they are not defending properly then it's as much an issue of management as anything else.

It's not hugely difficult to pick your moments to get ahead of the ball, to press a winger when he receives the ball instead of dropping off and letting him turn, to make contact before the box rather than waiting until he's in it and your options lessen, to stop crosses rather than standing back and waiting for them.

Have any of our managers/coaches told the fullbacks if they don't do the above they'll be in the stand watching next week?
