Joseph Lapira (born August 13, 1986, Lake Charles, Louisiana) is an American-born Irish soccer player who currently plays for the Notre Dame and for Baton Rouge Capitals in the USL Premier Development League. In 2006 he was the winner of the Hermann Trophy, awarded to the top collegiate player of the year, after scoring 22 goals for Notre Dame.

He qualifies for the Republic of Ireland by virtue of his Irish mother, and came to the attention of Irish boss Steve Staunton through his uncle, Michael Lynam, who works for the FAI. He gained a cap for Ireland on May 23rd, 2007 against Ecuador, becoming the first amateur player to play for Ireland since Willie Browne in 1964.

Lapira graduated from St. Louis Catholic High School in Lake Charles.

He is the cousin of Alex Ferrello, a 2007 alumnus from the University of Notre Dame.

If we do sign him at least the unwashed'll be happy that we have such an inclusive signing policy......

Come on now.

You should know that Celtic fans are innocent 'supporters' and Rangers fans are 'yobs' (according to the Sun anyway).

Bonnisiel wasnt that good tbh. Majority of the time we take players on trial that end up playing a season of reserve team football then we hear about them in a few months time and they have moved away.

Guest therabbitt

watched that Equador game on RTE, he did ok when he came on, although it want for long, looked really rough, untrained like, he put in a lot of effort, looked really fast and good on the ball, promising, hope he does well....

Id say he is an attacking midfielder from watching him in that game, unless he was deployed at as a striker and just came deep to receive the ball....

Didn't we once before sign an Irish American? I think he went on to play for Eire after he left us. We also have an Irish internationalist on the coaching staff of course. Trouble is I can't remember his name. ;)

No doubt the only ones being offended by this signing (if he does sign) will be the tims and the media

Remember how many times it was mentioned that PLG was catholic. Now we might have an Irish Catholic

They'll go into meltdown
