He appeared to be a decent bloke that many a Ranger respected. Saw him back in the day and wasn't a bad player. More level headed than your atypical taig. He's gone now to a brutal disease, so my condolences to his family. He was after all a father and grandfather who will be dearly missed and that is what is important at this time. However having known him for years, ( his wife Liz is a relation to my wife), i can say that he was a decent family man who was not in any bigoted, he married outside his own faith, Liz being Protestant. Billy McNeil played at a time when, by and large, Rangers and celtic players had a great deal of respect for each other and socialised together. He may have been that decent family man but what you’re saying about ‘many further up the chain who should have taken it in hand’ is pure deflection. In law there is a duty of care that requires individuals to report suspected abuse. If it was “an open secret” he is as liable as any of the others for not reporting it.
