Rangers’ victory in the Scottish under-18 league has qualified them for next season’s prestigious UEFA Youth League.

Set up in 2013, the competition mirrors the UEFA Champions League in many senses as it brings together the best talent from across the continent, albeit at under-19 level.

It’s the first time Gers will compete in the tournament, and again, it will offer the club’s young players a wonderful opportunity to test themselves against some of the very best talent at their age group.

Here’s how it works…

64 teams enter the UEFA Youth League, 32 from the ‘Domestic Champions’ path and 32 from the ‘UEFA Champions League’ path.

Rangers will enter in the ‘Domestic Champions’ path, along with the winners of the relevant age-group leagues from UEFA’s top 32-ranked nations.

The 32 teams who qualify for the main UEFA Champions League group stage are also invited to enter their teams in the Youth League, with those clubs also playing in a group stage with the fixtures mirroring that of the major competition.

Gers’ route in the ‘Domestic Champions’ path is a straight knockout competition, with the 32 teams whittled down to eight after two rounds.

Those eight will then go into a ‘play-off’ round with the eight second-placed teams from the ‘Champions League’ path.

Eight teams will emerge from that, and be drawn against the group winners from the ‘Champions League’ path in the Last-16, followed by the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

The semi-finals and final are played at the Colovray Stadium in Nyon, Switzerland over a four-day period, usually at the end of April, with the winner walking away with the Lennart Johnasson trophy.

The reigning champions are FC Porto, who won this season’ tournament with a 3-1 win over Chelsea in the final.

Chelsea have previously won the tournament twice, as have Barcelona, with the other one of the six winners so far being RB Salzburg.

Well done lads!

They have surpassed my expectations this season. They should be very proud of their achivements.

Hope that a good few of them get into the first team in the next few years. They deserve it. They play exciting attacking football. Joy to watch.

Fantastic achievement for our young guns...... hope they do us proud in Europe too.

Got a really good feeling about the way our youth players are developing at all ages...... could be the start of a golden era - were we produce a number of star players for the first team.

Here's hoping.
