He got lucky as the longer the play took to stop the less chance he had of getting booked. If there had been no ‘advantage’ and play was stopped immediately after the tackle he’d have been in the book IMO. Had Madden carried out his duties correctly then McGregor should have seen red although he ain’t stupid and probably wouldn’t have dived if on a yellow.
