Our central defence

Brilliant tonight, and fantastic players not even in the squad or on the pitch.

Goldson and Helander outstanding tonight. Katic has been brilliant this year when he's played and Edmundson has looked very, very decent albeit he's had limited minutes so far.

Long time since we've had so many solid central defenders at the club. Gives a good bit of confidence that even with Stevie G's rotation system we'll always have a solid two in the middle whenever we play.

Yeah the depth at centre back looks outstanding. 4 Good options to pick from

It's going to be a good headache for the manager moving forward to have.

Find it hard to understand how a defender that looked so assured tonight (Helander) could look so out of water against a big lump at Livi.

The thing is if Livi played in Europe they’d get horsed by teams from Macedonia. There isn’t really any logic to it and it frustrating as hell. It seems there is a bit of transitioning when you arrive in this backwater league to lower your levels and play like a thug.

It definitely has something to do with the physicality of our football and probably the pace it is played at.

Helander was awesome tonight, his lack of pace is still a worry for when we’re pushing up high and he had to take a booking because of it at one point tonight but the rest of his game I can’t find any fault with

Reads the game very well and he’s good on the ball, just the pace that has me a bit worried when he’s playing

You could say it with all of them , tonight they were terrific but we all know they can easily drop points against anyone in the following week. We need to be consistent and build on it......

Definitely an element of “roughing up” teams that can outplay you as it’s easier to buy big lumps of strikers like cosgroves, dykes and bowmans etc. than it is buying the likes of a mols or a jelavic.

Sometimes you get players with both (Alfie and Dado are prime examples) but it’s rare and it takes a while for technical players to adapt to the hammer throwers approach of hit the ball up the park and jump with a flying elbow to try and win the ball and if you hurt the opposition it’s seen as a fucking bonus.

its why the Scottish game is so bad, it needs a consolidated effort by all of the teams to start playing football and to stop buying big physical players. Granted the best players in the world and super athletes with skill as well but it’s a starting point. The trouble is livi, motherwell, the sheep etc. wont change their ways.

I almost think we’d be better having a European squad and a domestic squad or we just simply have to give our new signings a chance to settle and flourish (look at Barisic this time last year)

If someone offers us money for Goldson in January we take it in my opinion. Even if its just a few million. He may be a leader on the pitch or off it or be good at organising, But Edmundson and Katic are far better than him and with him being next to bombscare Tav we need our best CB on that side.

Helander looked nothing short of embarrassing his first few SPL games but he strolled tonight and never looked beaten apart from that one early header off the post.

Think of it like another sport like say tennis, some are better on clay courts some are better on hard courts and some are better on grass.

Doesn't make much sense to us normal folk where tennis is tennis and football is football but it does seem to work that way.

Only complaint is that at times our centre halves seem to mark an area rather than a man at crosses.  Happened last night when neither picked up the guy who had a great chance from a cross from their right. And it's happened previously with Katic too (dont remember Edmundson being caught similarly in his limited game time).

The partnership, reading of game, interceptions, blocks, even passing was all strong last night from both. But we need to stop the opposition getting unchallenged headers bang centre in front of our goal.

It’s fucking bizarre but he does absolutely strolls it in Europe, apart from his booking last night.

Schoolboy defending which we got away with. If they had scored from it would we still be reading that Helander had a great game?

That early header that hits the post goes in and game changes as does the score, the game and the reaction on here.

Fine margins.

A goal near the end from them and it would have been completely different on here . Big time

Not getting ourselves into winning positions , we will always be vulnerable at the back for me , especially matches in Europe

We played Porto in Portugal. Did you really expect they wouldn't create a chance or two?

Not getting your point or maybe you miss understood mine .

Getting a result was very good against a decent side. We probably restricted them to a minimal amount of chances until the last 10 minutes .

That was when I was think , we were going to lose it
