The Dude 20,026
Scottish football is in line to earn an extra place in the Champions League even if this season’s UEFA competitions are scrapped due to coronavirus. European football’s governing body has already postponed Euro 2020 for a year with no end in sight to the COVID-19 horror. And there remains huge question marks over how domestic leagues and UEFA’s two flagship tournaments should be concluded if football remains shut down beyond the ruling body’s optimistic target of finishing all tournaments by June. But Record Sport understands one table that WON’T be affected is the coefficient standings. Points accrued so far will be secured and the latest standings will not be altered should the Champions League and Europa League not be completed. Rangers and celtic ’s impressive runs in the Europa League have helped the nation jump to a lofty 14th spot in the co-efficient table - a rise of six places this season. Both teams have also risen in the club version - celtic to 45th and Rangers up to 94th - all of which means Scottish football is set to benefit as of season 2021-22. A top 15 spot brings with it an extra spot in the Champions League qualifiers with the Premiership winners entering at the third qualifying round. It would also mean one Europa League third qualifying round place and two teams in the second round of qualifying for the soon to be established Europa Conference League. UEFA’s intention remains to complete both competitions by the end of June despite the COVID-19 crisis bringing the football season to a shuddering halt. To most that timescale appears optimistic at best and fears have risen that coefficient spots could be affected should UEFA fail to conclude the competitions. A UEFA insider told Record Sport a decision would be made on that should the situation arise adding: “It’s UEFA’s clear intention to finish both competitions”. But we understand the current coefficient standings will be locked in should the Champions League and Europa League fail to resume for the current campaign. Importantly the UEFA constitution states: “Match points are awarded only for matches which have actually been played, in accordance with the final scores ratified by UEFA.” Rangers were Scotland’s only side left in Europe before the coronavirus crisis led to the postponement of both competitions. But Steven Gerrard’s side are up against it in the Europa League last 16 having lost their first leg against Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 at Ibrox. Earlier in the competition they had beaten Braga, Porto and Feyenoord in a stunning campaign. Neil Lennon's celtic pulled off an outstanding double with home and away victories against Lazio in their group before bowing out to Copenhagen in the last 32. Should the competition resume only two nations could potentially leapfrog Scotland - Greece who have Olympiakos left in the Europa League but are 1.575 points behind us in the standings and Switzerland who have Basel still in the same competition and are 2.275 points behind.
