The time has scarce gone round boys

Three hundred years ago

When Rebels on old Derry's Walls

Their faces dare not show

When James and all his rebel band

Came up to Bishops Gate

With heart and hand and sword and shield

We forced them to retreat.

Chorus.

We'll fight and don't surrender

But come when duty calls,

With heart and hand and sword and shield

We'll guard old Derry's Walls.

Verse 2

When blood it flow in crimson streams

Through many a winter's night

They knew the Lord was on their side

To help them in their fight

They Nobly stood upon the walls

Determined for to fight,

To fight and gain the victory

And raise the Crimson high;

Chorus.

They'll fight and don't surrender

But come when duty calls,

With heart and hand and sword and shield

We'll guard old Derry's Walls.

Verse 3

At last, at last, with one broad side,

Kind heaven sent their aid,

The boom that crossed, The Foyle was broke

And James he was dismayed

The banner, boys, that floated

Was run aloft with joy,

God bless the hands that broke the boom,

And saved the Apprentice Boys!

Chorus.

They'll fight and don't surrender

But come when duty calls,

With heart and hand and sword and shield

We'll guard old Derry's Walls.

That’s a bit harsh tbh. The original podders are & in the most part continue to be great. It’s some of the newer podders that are fucking woeful & you couldn’t pay me to listen to them.

Well said David.

I hope I never hear that

A few songs have been bastardised over the course of time.

There's no Buckfast wine in the sash either imho

The Sash, Follow Follow, Derry's Walls, Build My Gallows and loads more have all been bastardised over the years. Some deliberately (no surrender in Derrys walls) and others just through misheard lyrics/words falling out of common use (straits in Follow Follow)

So what is it, heart in hand or heart and hand ?

@.Williamson. has put doubts in my mind, would expect a staunch Ulster man to be right here tbh 😆

I sing heart in hand but it appears it's heart and hand

Doesn't matter as we all sing the wrong lyrics at the games anyway so aye

It's not. Its 'With heart in hand...'

'With heart and hand' doesn't make sense. Heart in hand signifies them taking an oath to defend Derry's walls using sword and shield.

Always took this to be the case. Hand on your heart, to swear to defend Derry's walls.

I thought the podcast name was just a clever bit of word play.
