A Barry Ferguson type player who can run box to box, be a playmaker and score a few goals a season doesn't even exist anymore. That British type player has been dead for a long time.

Yeah pretty much. Since a midfield three became the go to system in the middle of the park the all round midfielder has gradually died out and what you tend to get now is midfield threes which contains one of each style of player - one who can hold, one who can run and one who is more attack minded - rather than the all rounders you got 15-20 years ago.

Fortunately SG is managing.   A box to box midfielder who can do the lot.  He knows more than any of us what is needed and if he can bring in a couple of midfielders with similar attributes to himself we will be doing just fine.

Yeah the “all action” box-to-box player was so much more valuable when you had two in midfield because you could pair him with anyone depending on the opponent.

With a three-man midfield playing like that would almost be a negative because you wouldn’t “specialise” in one of the three roles.

It’s depressing.

I see a lot of goodwill ebbing away from players in here already, the squad as a whole have given us great journey this season, whilst it is always important to strengthen when on top some of the flak directed is going slightly over the top....because we were below par yesterday their seems to be a couple of players getting it in the neck more than others

I don’t think it’s goodwill ebbing away. Everyone in this squad gets a form of legendary status forever after delivering 55.

It is recognised that we need to strengthen though. We’ve been a bit run over the top in midfield in the last 2 OFs against a pretty poor celtic team, and similarly with Slavia.

Jack is too injury prone, Davis and Arfield can’t go forever and Kamara is likely to move on. Add to that Aribo still hasn’t shown what he really can do in a big game at CM as yet.

Best to build from a position of strength. Two CMs and an RAF of starting 11 quality required.

If Jack is out for season then either Arfield or Zungu need to be playing from now on.

The nonsense of Aribo and Hagi playing together in tougher matches needs to stop.

You are sounding like a broken record.

Whether you like it or not, Aribo & Hagi are better players than Arfield & Zungu all day long.

Sure, Aribo hasn't been good lately but nowhere near as bad as you go on about him.

I think that's my point...the whole midfield is more or less getting written off:lol:

I take your point but in the same token the team is still 33 unbeaten in the league and eventually lost the first game in 13 in Europe....it seriously can't be all bad going into next season, depending on who stays but for now i think we definitely need a creative centre midfielder and if Kamara goes another of his ilk....I've enjoyed Kamara running further up the pitch this season....those runs will be missed if he were to leave

Does the formation we play suit either Aribo or Hagi.

Would they not be better playing in that no mans land in behind a front two and in between the opposition defence and midfield?

This. If you are not going to utilize Aribo & Hagi in the right position, it will continue to be a problem.

A Pedro Mendes type is needed. We need to splurge big at this position imo.

More like an Ian Ferguson for me and a striker but that's for another thread.

Hagi plays a different position to Arfield and Zungu so no idea what you’re on about.

Aribo is fucking woeful in midfield. That’s two Old firm games he’s played in midfield and two of the most insipid performances you’re ever likely to see.

Without sounding like a broken record myself mate, neither Aribo or Hagi are played in the correct position imo.

I have found myself disagreeing with Gerrard a lot lately. For me, either Roofe or Wright are the two right-hand forward options. Shoehorning a player just because he has talent doesn't work.

But who am I to question team selections in an undefeated league campaign, huh?

Having seen the change in development in Jack since the coaching team arrived, when Jack was 26, I am pretty confident they can still find a few more levels in players like Aribo at 25 and Hagi 23, the ages they will reach over the course of next season.

I would only expect us to make massive changes in midfield if Kamara leaves, wouldn't be shocked if Zungu has already been replaced with the addition of Ofoborh

Ofoborh will not be a first team starter. He will be a work in progress. Just look at the number of games he has started and not at a high level. He must have been identified as having potential but definitely not a starter next season.

Zungu’s pish though. Agree with Aribo and Hagi....both waste of a jersey yesterday.

Never seen him play but he can't get a game on loan at Wycombe the last I checked.
