Breakaway European Super League

You  can see the way this is going. The ESL wont happen but UEFA will bend over and take it up the arse again and give them what they want, set in stone places every year in the champions league for some and more games between the so called "big teams". You just know everyone else will get shafted.

Then UEFA will have the problem themselves. They bend anymore then the whole system will snap. All they have to do is hold firm and let the countries do the talking. These clubs do need the severest punishment ever seen or they will try this stunt again.

Pretty impressive that these clubs have drawn up plans for something that even Amazon are sounding cautious about.

Amazon are sounding cautious because, like Sky and BT, they won't be part of the tv deal for the super league. Amazon will be snapping up the premier league very soon.

I don't think this will happen now, but one thing they have really underestimated is that predictability in fixtures kills the atmosphere at European games. It would become stagnant after a few seasons and boring. The real buzz in Europe is drawing a team you haven't played in years and getting the rare away days etc.  You see it when teams draw each other a lot in Champions League, the magic is soon lost.

Someone was saying the other night how Liverpool and Milan have only faced each other twice in European football, both of which happened to be in the CL finals. Playing that two-four times a year? Boring.

Exactly mate - not to mention the repeated chance of EPL teams playing each other in all the tournaments.  4-6 Manchester derbies a year given how utter shite they generally have been lately? No thanks.

If the stories are true then both Real & Barcelona are in serious financial difficulty, say what you want about the pandemic but Barca & Real have wasted hundreds of millions in poor transfer activity and giving average players with limited ability outrageous wages

It stinks of Perez dreaming up this cash cow to get himself out his fucking mess.....get it so far to fuck

Look how we suffered because we got hounded for a fictitious tax bill....fucking Real & Barca should pay the price instead of being rewarded for their greed

Exactly, Barcelona spent over £300M on three players. Dembele, Coutinho and Griezmann. Then they somehow wonder how there in massive amounts of debt. Stevie Wonder could see there issues coming.

On the topic of how often the teams would be playing each other I wish Scottish football would restructure so we didn’t play the same teams constantly.

Honestly can’t be bothered seeing celtic again in a couple weeks

I've always felt like this, would much rather see a 16/18 team league. Sky would hate it but would make these games more prestigious only playing them twice a season.

Two takes, either they're raging that a rival platform is getting the rights or they realise how much of an utter fuck up and PR disaster this is. Almost every fan has turned on these 12 clubs, despite China and USA. Europe is still a huge market if the vast majority of fans ain't interested in paying a penny to watch a shite friendly competition then it's fucked from the start.

Remember when we didn't play them for 6 months years ago and the absolutely massive build to the game? Granted we played them like four times in a month after that and was boring as fuck by the fourth game.

The real reason for the ESL :

Approx debt

Barcelona £1.1 bn

Real Madrid £800 m

Atletico  £884 m

Juventus £340 m

Inter Milan £560 m

Chelsea £1.4 bn

Arsenal £200 m +

Man City £173 m

Man Utd £535 m

AC Milan £260 m

Tottenham £534 m

Liverpool £157 m

This list makes a mockery of the Financial Fair Play rules.  As for the Real Madrid president, he's a liar and a hypocrite.   His club had a previous enormous debt which they managed to cut back by doing a Tim-like deal with the city council.  Twenty years ago they sold off land to the council for 480 million Euros and it was only worth a tiny fraction of that sum.   Also in 1998 they got a piece of land from Madrid council valued at approx 500,000 Euros.  They sold it back to the council in 2013 for almost 23 million Euros.  State Aid just like our east end rivals.  Barcelona are in significant bother as they are due to make repayments of debt this summer to the tune of hundreds of millions of Euros.  They haven't got the ability to make such repayments.

FFP has been well and truly showing to be useless. These clubs just found a way around it.

As for Pérez trying to claim this is to save football what a load of shite. This is bail many of these clubs out due to reckless spending.

To be honest the whole seeding and incorporation of a bigger group stage to 16 teams was a good idea in essence, the problem is UEFA got greedy and started allowing non champions in and thus the bigger leagues now run the show.

Scotland never actually got a spot straight into group stage until 04-05 season, 10 years later when the tournament was expanded to 8 groups of 4, we were never benefiting from straight entry into the GS.

The non-Champions entry was inevitable anyway after the Bosman decision. It meant that their flagship event was going to become increasingly less marketable than their third ranked tournament in the UEFA Cup.

I'm not one to defend UEFA per se but they have done an ok job on trying to balance the interests of the big clubs against wider football concerns for a long time. The big clubs and nations would have excluded the smaller ones a long time ago completely if they had their way. UEFA have to balance their decision making as both a hand break and a release. UEFA certainly haven't been helped by things like the EU dictating to them that their laws should be enforced across competitions that include non-EU member states for a start.

You have to remember that UEFA are effectively a representative democracy in the loosest sense of the term. The decisions that are made simply reflect millions of preferences from fans to players to clubs to national associations. Just like in a nation state some agglomorated interests are more powerful than others and rent seekers will always appear to protect their own interests at the exclusion of others.

FPP was a decision that benefited existing big clubs in big nations over up and coming clubs with new access to finance and big clubs in smaller nations. Platini knew this when it was introduced.

Edit: Platini was a massive disaster for the game in Europe. Johannsson was a very good President of UEFA and I think football would be in a much better place now if he had won the FIFA election against Blatter.

As I see it, this silly concept is tantamount to bringing the game into disrepute', so if the EPL had any balls they should charge the six with such and deduct them a minimum 15 points. That would ensure most of them won't be in the CL next year, costing them millions.

Been said before but worth repeating. Expand the league to 14 teams. Everybody plays everybody else home and away (26 games) then a split. Top 6 play each other home and away (36 game season). Bottom 8 also play each other home and away for a 40 game season. Just too sensible for the SPFL.
