Breakaway European Super League

As I see it, this silly concept is tantamount to bringing the game into disrepute', so if the EPL had any balls they should charge the six with such and deduct them a minimum 15 points. That would ensure most of them won't be in the CL next year, costing them millions.

The 6 boards don't want CL next year. That's basically the premise for all of this.

Throw them out the league. Fine them all their TV money. Let them back in next season if they denounce the super league.

Been said before but worth repeating. Expand the league to 14 teams. Everybody plays everybody else home and away (26 games) then a split. Top 6 play each other home and away (36 game season). Bottom 8 also play each other home and away for a 40 game season. Just too sensible for the SPFL.

Why not just do a top 7  like the idea though mate.

It's to stop 1 team from each section sitting out a game week due to an odd number. 6 teams in the top split would be 3 games each week opposed to 3 games and a team sitting out, the bottom split would be 4 games as opposed to 3 games with a team sitting out.

I like this as well and hoped we went for that when the restructure was being discussed.

Just noted the increasing power of the big four nations (Germany,Spain,Italy,England) since they introduced the CL group format in 1991-92.

10 out of the previous 36 finals were won by clubs not from these big 4, that's 28%.

From 1991 onwards it dropped to 3 from 29 finals or 10%.

In fact the last club not from these four nations to win it was Porto in 2004.

Worse still, since that Porto win 17 years ago, only one *finalist* who didn't come from the big 4 was PSG last year.

Absolute stitch up and can only get worse.

Again, as Rangers fans we can't really complain about anything resulting from the introduction of the Group Stage in 1991. Although it's perhaps another blot we can add to the Murray copybook.

Champions League should have never been made into the format that it is now. UEFA and the big clubs got greedy back then. Big clubs are trying it again now but thanks to the internet and social media they've been found out.

If UEFA had any sort of moral compass they would return the Champions League to being exactly that, the Champions only.

Then instead of swamping the Europa League with lots of diddy teams, make that for the 2nd place league sides and cup winners.

European football has been diluted so much you can barely taste the juice.

Group stages are fine. It's the teams that occupy seedings from finishing 4th in their league thats the issue.

As much as I would love to go back to a European Cup for just champions its completely a daft idea now. The Europa League would be more marketable than the Champions League.

Nothing wrong with group stages but just make for the 16 champions for the top ranked nations. Everybody else has to play qualifiers for a group stage spot.

The format approved today is nothing but an abomination.

Would it though if it was just 2nd place and cup winning teams?

There is zero need to have a team finishing 3rd or 4th in their league in European competition.

Slim it down. Get rid of the 40 million qualifiers. Have play offs for lowest placed leagues.

Agree 100%. It’s also part of the excitement of these tournaments. Being drawn against some mob you don’t even know where they are, trying to find them on the map. It’s all very well for UEFA to attack these proposals but they would win massive points with me if they also admitted at the same time that the situation is partly of their own making with the disparity of the CL format.

Now is a time for real leadership in the game. A statement along the lines of “we recognise our own faults in the behaviour of these clubs. We were wrong too. We’ve been held to ransom by money over integrity of sport and we’d like to use this opportunity to move forward with a new, inclusive and fair CL open equally to the champions of all European leagues.....”

I am old enough to remember it took just five rounds or 9 games to win the European Cup. Now it would take a team like Rangers about 17 games including qualifiers. I don't mind more games but it allows the big boys to absorb the shock results and take away the threat of not progressing to where they think they belong.
