If England are top tier right now then its simply because the bar for top tier has never been lower.

They were lucky to get to the final and were chasing shadows when Italy got the finger out and actually turned up. The first good team they've faced in the competition.

Think there’s no doubt that the quality of teams is lower than it was 20 year ago tbh.

Brazil, Argentina, France, Holland, Germany, Spain etc were absolutely stacked with talent.

Come on, you don’t get to a semi final and final of successive tournaments without being a top team no matter how much Scotland fans wish it wasn’t true. Italy were the team of the tournament and couldn’t beat England in 120 mins. The Germans were runners up in the so called group of death and England made it look easy.

If England are not one of the top European teams right now I’m not sure who is. Spain who went out on pens to Italy the same as England? Belgium who were beaten by them? France who drew with Hungary and were knocked out by the Swiss? The Dutch who went out to a Czech team England beat comfortably?

You can not like England, but if people genuinely can’t give this young team credit for being one of the best international teams around at the moment then they need to have a look at themselves.

I've given them credit. They are a solid second tier international team alongside the likes of Belgium, Spain, Germany. The fact that the last time they actually won something came before most folk had colour TVs tells you why they aren't a top tier team now.

St Johnstone one of Scotland's elite teams now lads? Two cup wins last season.

England are a top side at the moment.

Different type of England side from the individually better team they had 10-15yrs ago, but unlike the golden generation England had, this side is one filled with players who are square pegs for square holes and can play as a team. They do lack a cutting edge player though.

That said, football seems to have fewer stand out, match winning, players than it did 15-20yrs ago. I think with modern coaching, the bar between good and outstanding has blurred making it far harder for outstanding to stand out.

What has the last time they won anything got to do with how the current team perform?

If St Johnstone did it in the league, the country’s top competition the same as the Euros are to UEFA or the World Cup is to FIFA then absolutely they would be considered one of the top teams at that moment in time.

Top sides win things. England's last won a trophy when Harold Wilson was PM and Scot Symon was Rangers manager.

So your judging the current crop of England players on the failure of teams before them, makes perfect sense. You do not get to the semi final and and final of successive tournaments without being a top side.

No, I'm jusdging them on their own failures to win anything.

They played 6 of 7 games at home coming up against the might of Scotland, Denmark, Ukraine, Croatia, Czech Republic, a Germany team who had already binned the manager and then a good side in Italy.

At the World Cup they faced true giants in Paraguay and Panama in the groups, as well as Belgium, before Colombia, Sweden and Croatia.

A good draw can go a long way.

I've thought for a wee while the overall standard of player has declined over the years, Ronaldo and Messi aside.

Isn’t it funny that when England are confident about beating said teams they’re arrogant, then when they beat them they’re ‘easy’ games. I also remember rival fans telling us Germany, Italy, Croatia and the Danes would all beat us comfortably and yet none did apart from the winners Italy who couldn’t win in 120 mins and had to do it via pens. Look back through tournaments of times gone by and plenty of teams have had so called easy runs to the final and it’s never been mentioned until it’s England and the haters need some straws to clutch.

Out of interest who are the top international sides right now?

Aye Casemiro and Fabinho couldn't lace Rice or Phillips boots.

Thiago Silva is inferior to Maguire and Stones. Alex Sandro shit compared to Shaw.

Only 3 England players would be guaranteed a start for Brazil. Kane, Sterling and TAA.

TAA is England's 4th choice, how is he a nailed on starter for Brazil?

The daily record has it as it's picture of the tournament.

Gutter press at its finest

They’re also making a big deal of people without tickets rushing into the stadium. Obviously forgotten the hordes of Scots trying to climb over the wall to get into Wembley in the past.

Dont approve of fans using violence to get in but when you see the like of Tom fucking Cruise sitting there you can understand why real football fans get upset at not getting a ticket
