He went off the rails after his wife died so probably the effects of drink and stress.

Yip, sure there was an article years ago, where he got into alot of gambling debt, borrowed money off his neighbour/good friend and never paid him back... His wife dying sent him over the edge unfortunately

It's probably right to be a bit concerned about the big guy. He's 55 and looks older than my dad who is 75.

He was a good player for us, but not in the Gough, or Butcher Mould etc etc. Very good for the national team at the time when he played for Blackburn I think. From memory, was it Advocat that signed him?

Don't know mate but Wikipedia says Advocaat in 1998.

Advocaat was the manager but I think Murray might’ve signed him……

He’s not had a lot of luck/ or made good decisions off the pitch once his playing career finished.  Hes 55 (55 whoop whoop 🙌 ) so it’s catching up with him and he’s not looking good for a retired athlete.

He did the presentations at a tournament my son was at, in Blackpool, a couple of years ago, and didn’t look the best then, either.

I thought he was over-rated as a defender. Not bad, by any means - a good battler, but lacked the nous of top defenders.

Won the Premier League, and a Treble with us - a mainstay of the Scotland team and people think he wasn't a good defender. :-( He was a great defender.

But seems to have struggled with life since his career ended, and unfortunately not the only one to do so.

He was shite mate. Unfortunately he's been dealt a shite set of cards.

Signed by Murray, when Advocaat didn’t really want him. Wasn’t his type of player. A bit like a better Duffy rather than a ball player.

Terrible hand dealt to him with what happened with his wife, but no ill will. Haven’t ever heard him speak badly about his.

Also part of a treble winning team.
