Popular Post 16BlueSherbert90 19,654
RIGHT CALL Piers Morgan praises Rangers players & fans for ‘correct response to Uefa’ as they sing National Anthem at packed Ibrox PIERS MORGAN has hailed Rangers for their response to Uefa after the Ibrox side defied strict rules to pay their own special tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II. The long reigning Monarch passed away a week ago aged 96 at Balmoral sparking mass tributes around the world. And the Ibrox side were no different as they paid their respects in the build-up to last night's Champions League clash against Italian side, Napoli. Rangers held an impeccably observed minute's silence prior to kick off followed by a rousing rendition of the National Anthem 'God Save the King' despite being told not to by Uefa. The football governing body had rejected requests to play the National Anthem from British clubs ahead of the latest round of European fixtures, according to a report. Uefa confirmed they received multiple requests over the issue but insisted they must 'remain consistent across all UK venues'. But Rangers defied the request and revealed that they would indeed carry out the mark of respect ahead of kick-off. In a statement released on social media, the club said: "Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will be honoured this evening at Ibrox with a minute’s silence, a display created by the Union Bears, and a rendition of the Nation Anthem. "If you are attending tonight’s match, we encourage all supporters to be in their seat for 19:50." But their tribute earned praise from The Sun's columnist Piers Morgan who loved the club's decision to defy the Uefa order. Speaking on his show Piers Morgan: Uncensored, the broadcaster said: " Now that is the correct response to Uefa, isn't it." In response, fellow panellist Tony Parson's agreed saying: "Yes it is. "I think that future historians will look at this week and see it as the week that Queen Elizabeth II secured the Union. "I think she knew what she was doing when she went up to Balmoral." The Ibrox side are known for having close ties with the Royal Family and have a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in their dressing room above the spot the club captain gets ready before games. They have arranged several tributes already - including the laying of a wreath outside the stadium and the lowering of the flag above the entrance to Ibrox to sit at half mast. Manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst was pictured placing the flowers as a mark of respect on Saturday. Think what you will of Piers, but he's got it spot this time. I appreciate him speaking out about this. The only thing I don't necessarily agree with is Our Queen knowing what she was doing. I believe she wanted to be at her happiest place which was always Balmoral..imo. surfsup2, AGC123, Bobby Hume and 2 others
