Anyone seen this its a petition by some Austrian fans to stop their team taking part in the European Championships as co-hosts as they think theyll embaress the nation.

Things have got to be bad for them to go to that length I doubt even during the dismal Berti era we'd have done that.

Having said that if they did get enough support for the petition do you think the team would withdraw, it'd mean another place up for grabs.

RDB :

These are the actions of the dissident fans from Rapid Viena (coincidentally, they play in "green and white and are the perennial whingers of Austrian football - possible similarities here with a team in Scotland, they are similalrly despised). Anyway, the Rapid fans have a massive chip on their shoulder (similarities ?) and at the recent game at their stadium versus Scotland (in May, 2007), their Ultras continuously jeered several non Rapid players of the Austrian national team. One, in particular Andreas Ivanschitz (the captain and an ex- Rapid player who defected once upon a time to near rivals Austria Vienna) was the subject of derogatory chants and "threats to kill" by the Ultras.

The Ultras unfurled numerous banners one of which was against the Austrian Football Federation (for sanctioning nationals games at the Rapid stadium),; others wished the national team to be an embarrassment in Euro 2008 and one called the aforenamed Ivanschitz - a Judas (not nice equating someone in Austria as being a Jew).

The Rapid fans are loathed in Austria and their conduct during the game had to be seen to be believed, missiles were thrown at Ivanschitz during the game by the Rapid Fans and but for the safety netting, I think he would have been assualted/injured.

The Austrians are a proud lot and very nationalistic and please be aware that the "anti" campaign is solely inspired by the Rapid Vienna fans. As mentioned, Rapid are the poor relations of Vienna, basically, their fans are by an large from the lower socio economic groups and less likeley to be educated, but, with a massive complex. They are not representative of the rest of Austria and when the games do start in Euro 2008, don't expect the Austrians to lie over - they may even surprise !

Bro, it's a Rangers forum, not a university lecture :)
